The story where it all began

One of Germany's oldest breeds, it was listed in the German stud book by 1880 and shares ancestry with the Schnauzer. After the Second World War it almost disappeared, and Werner Jung rebuilt it from one standard Pinscher and four large Miniature Pinschers, with a litter born again in 1958.124

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

It is the original-size pinscher and an ancestor of the Dobermann and the Miniature Pinscher.3

  2. 2

The word 'pinscher' is linked to a term meaning to bite or grip, reflecting its ratting past.3

  3. 3

It once worked as a carriage and stable dog and rat catcher.2

  4. 4

Between 2008 and 2017 about 350-450 puppies were born each year in Germany.2
