Coat and looks how to spot one

harsh double coat

A medium-length weatherproof coat made of stiff, longer guard hairs over a soft, thick undercoat, on a rectangular spitz frame with a tail carried in a sickle or curl.12

Coloursyellow to golden-red in lighter or darker shades, paler on the chest, belly, legs and under the tail12

Personality what they are like

A bold, lively and strong-minded hunting spitz with a keen sense for game and plenty of drive. It is built to work independently in the forest and brings real persistence to the job.12

Daily activity how busy a day looks

High. The breed needs a lot of physical and mental work to be content; the Swedish Kennel Club describes it as a specialist hunting dog that does not suit a purely companion life.1

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Low effort: brush through the coat while it sheds and bathe only when needed.1

Home where they are happiest

Best with an active hunting home in the countryside with regular access to forest work.1

Company who they like around

Bred to work closely with a hunter; thrives when it has an active role and a clear job alongside its owner.1

The story where it all began

The breed traces back to a litter of moose-hunting dogs born in the late 1930s near the Hällefors works in central Sweden. Hunters kept the type going for decades, a breed club formed in 1994, and its register became the basis for official SKK registration in 2000.12

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

It is named after Hällefors, the ironworks district in Sweden where its founding litter was born.1

  2. 2

Its stud book is open, so dogs that look and work like the breed can still be approved and added.1

  3. 3

Wikipedia notes that Finnish Spitz and Ostyak Laika dogs are among its ancestors.2

  4. 4

It is recognised in the Nordic countries but has no FCI recognition, which makes it a true local speciality.1

Recognised by the official bits

Svenska Kennelklubben (SKK)
Registered by the Swedish Kennel Club in 2000; accepted by the Nordic Kennel Union but not recognised by the FCI. The stud book is kept open for dogs of correct type.1
Suomen Kennelliitto / Norsk Kennel Klub
Also recognised by the Finnish and Norwegian kennel clubs.2
