Personality what they are like

Steady and bold without being quarrelsome, with an independent, thinking mind. It is gentle and loving with its own family and livestock, and keeps a watchful eye on anyone it does not know.1

High. The Royal Kennel Club suggests more than two hours of exercise a day.3

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

A short coat that sheds; brush more than once a week.3

Home where they are happiest

Best suited to country living with a large house and a big, secure garden; it copes well with outdoor life in varied weather.3

Company who they like around

Bonds deeply with its family or flock; as a natural guardian it benefits from early socialisation and an experienced owner.13

The story where it all began

The Kangal descends from livestock guardian dogs that came to Anatolia with Central Asian peoples, and it took its present look in the Kangal area near Sivas while guarding Akkaraman sheep. It has worked with shepherds for centuries and is regarded as Turkey's national dog.12
