Coat and looks how to spot one

short, hard double coat

A short, thick, flat and weather-resistant topcoat over a fine undercoat, a touch longer on the neck. The body is low-set, sturdy and a little longer than it is tall.13

Coloursblack and tanliver and tan14

Personality what they are like

A cheerful, chatty little dog that is devoted to its people and picks up new tasks fast. It mixes a herder's focus with a terrier's zest for chasing rats and rabbits.142

Daily activity how busy a day looks

A medium to high energy dog; up to an hour of exercise a day, and it is always ready for a walk.24

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

An easy-care coat: a brush once a week is enough, with a little more during shedding.2

Home where they are happiest

Its small size suits most homes, provided it gets daily walks and mental work.24

Company who they like around

Very attached to its family and happiest when included in daily life.14

The story where it all began

Heelers were used as farm dogs in Lancashire for generations, both for driving cattle and for ratting. They probably came from crosses between Welsh Corgis that brought cattle to Ormskirk and local Manchester Terriers. A breed club and standard followed in 1978 after enthusiasts revived the type in the 1960s.123

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

A happy Lancashire Heeler may pull back its lips in what looks like a human smile.3

  2. 2

The standard likes to see a 'thumb mark', a dark spot just above each front foot.1

  3. 3

A 2024 UK study found it had the longest average life of the breeds studied, about 15.4 years.3

  4. 4

It is both a herder and a ratter, working cattle by nipping at their heels and hunting vermin like a terrier.1

  5. 5

Only 173 puppies were registered in the UK in 2006, which is why it is a Vulnerable Native Breed.3
