Coat and looks how to spot one

short, coarse, single coat

A sturdy, medium-to-large mastiff type that is longer than it is tall, with a broad head and a black mask. The hair is short, flat and rough to the touch, with no undercoat, and is a little longer over the withers and back of the thighs.1

Personality what they are like

Steady and confident, this breed carries itself with a quiet, slightly reserved dignity. It bonds closely with its own family and is responsive to them, while staying watchful and aloof with people it does not know.14

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Needs at least about an hour of daily exercise plus mental work such as training games to stay settled.3

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Low-maintenance coat: a weekly brush is usually enough, alongside routine nail, ear and tooth care. Early, ongoing socialisation and consistent reward-based training from an owner experienced with large, strong dogs are recommended.3

Home where they are happiest

Best suited to a home with secure outdoor space and an owner who can give structure and plenty of daily activity.3

Company who they like around

Forms a strong bond with its household and does best with close daily contact and early, broad socialisation with people and other animals.13

The story where it all began

The breed grew out of old island catch dogs of the Canary Islands, mixing local 'majorero' farm dogs with imported molossers, and was prized for handling and guarding cattle. It became scarce by the 1960s, and enthusiasts formed a Spanish breed club in 1982 that drew up a standard and steered its revival.12
