A quick, hard-working hunter that uses its eyes, ears and nose to find game. Away from the woods it is alert, eager to please and affectionate with its family, with enough backbone to make a good watchdog.23

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Very high. Plan on at least an hour or more of vigorous exercise each day, ideally with jobs such as hunting, tracking or dog sports.3

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Low upkeep: brush once or twice a week, bathe only when needed, and keep nails and teeth in good order.3

Home where they are happiest

Best suited to rural homes with room to roam rather than apartment life.3

Company who they like around

Bonds well with its family and usually gets along with other dogs when well socialised; consistent training helps channel its strong will.3

The story where it all began

Treeing Curs come from the backwoods of the United States, where families needed one dog that could hunt, guard the homestead and help with livestock. Breeders chose dogs purely for working ability, which is why the breed varies so much in size and colour. Alex and Ray Kovac led the push for UKC recognition, granted in 1998.12

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

It is the most varied of all the Cur breeds in size and colour, because breeders never selected for looks.1

  2. 2

The UKC standard does not penalise honourable scars from work.1

  3. 3

It trees a wide range of game, from squirrels and raccoons to bobcats and even bears.1

  4. 4

Some Treeing Curs trail silently while others give voice on the track.3
