At a glance the quick version
Sources give 20-45 lb (about 9-20 kg) for the mix as a whole, with no split by sex. Size depends mostly on whether a Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle was used, and each dog also varies with what it inherits from each parent.
Coat and looks how to spot one
soft, wavy to curly, low-shedding
A plush, silky coat that can fall anywhere between the Wheaten's soft waves and the Poodle's tighter curls. It tends to shed little, but because every puppy takes after its parents in its own way, coat texture is never fully predictable.134
Personality what they are like
A bright, happy dog that loves its people and gets excited easily. It mixes the Poodle's sharp mind with the Wheaten's friendly nature, so it learns fast, though it can have a stubborn streak. Its personality will lean towards one parent or the other, so each Whoodle is a little different.134
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Lively and energetic. Plan on active outings twice a day plus games, puzzle toys or swimming to keep both body and mind busy. On warm days bring water and find shade.13
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Brush and comb daily so the soft coat does not tangle, and book regular professional grooms for bathing and trims.13
Home where they are happiest
Suits an active household where someone is around for much of the day, as Whoodles like company and do best with plenty of time alongside their family.31
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A complete, good-quality dog food matched to size and age. Busy, active Whoodles may need a little more food than a calmer dog of the same size.3
Company who they like around
Very people-focused and usually great with children and friendly with other dogs once socialised. The terrier side may want to chase small pets, so early introductions help.13
The story where it all began
Breeders began pairing Poodles with Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers around the 1980s, part of a wider trend of crossing the Poodle with other breeds for its low-shedding coat. The Wheaten side brings two centuries of work as an all-round Irish farm dog that herded, guarded and kept vermin down.125
