Looks how to spot one

Scales and fins

Males have a slender body with large, flowing fins; females are fuller-bodied with shorter fins. The albino mutation gives the fish red or pink eyes and a translucent, pinkish-white body that makes the red colour appear especially bright.61

Personality what they are like

Peaceful, social and very active. Males constantly court females with frantic swimming displays, but they are harmless to other fish and ideal for community tanks.12

Daily activity how busy a day looks

High. They swim actively all day and need open space for swimming plus hiding spots among plants.1

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Very low. No special grooming needed. Regular water changes and filter maintenance keep them healthy.4

Home where they are happiest

Minimum 10 gallon (38 L) tank with gentle water flow. Temperature 24-28°C (75-82°F), pH 6.8-8.5, hardness 10-30 dKH. Dense live plants (e.g. Ceratophyllum, Egeria) are essential to give females refuge from male attention. Keep at least 2-3 females per male to reduce stress.136

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivorous. Staple diet of high-quality flakes or micro pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworms. Colour-enhancing feeds help maintain the vibrant red. Feed small amounts twice daily.12

Company who they like around

Peaceful community fish. Best kept in groups with a ratio of one male to at least two or three females to prevent the males from exhausting the females. Compatible with other small, non-aggressive fish like tetras, rasboras, corydoras and other livebearers. Avoid fin-nipping species.14

The story where it all began

The Albino Full Red Guppy is a selectively bred variety of the common guppy (Poecilia reticulata). It was developed by isolating the recessive albino gene and then breeding for intense, solid red colour across the body and fins. Unlike wild guppies, which are grey or silver with spots, this strain has a translucent pinkish-white body and red eyes, with the red pigment appearing especially vivid. The variety is entirely man-made and does not occur in nature.162
