Looks how to spot one

scales

The Albino Oscar has a robust, oval-shaped body typical of cichlids. Its scales are smooth and iridescent, and the fish has large, expressive eyes with red or pink pupils due to albinism. The fins are rounded and elongated in males.67

Personality what they are like

Albino Oscars are semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as adults. They are known to rearrange tank decor and will eat any fish that fits in their mouth. They can be kept with other large, robust fish if raised together, but are best kept alone or in a bonded pair. During spawning they become very protective.637

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Oscars are active swimmers that need plenty of open water. They also enjoy digging and moving substrate. Provide a large tank with a sand or fine gravel bottom and sturdy decor that can be rearranged.37

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Care is moderate. Powerful filtration and regular partial water changes (25-30% weekly) are essential because Oscars produce a lot of waste. They are sensitive to poor water quality, which can cause hole-in-the-head disease. Albino individuals may be sensitive to bright light, so provide shaded areas or dimmer lighting.632

Home where they are happiest

Minimum tank size for a single adult is 75 gallons (284 litres); for a pair or community tank, 125 gallons (473 litres) or more. Water temperature 23-27°C, pH 6.0-8.0, hardness 5-12 dGH. Use a sand or fine gravel substrate, and provide hiding spots with large rocks, driftwood, or caves. Avoid sharp decorations. Artificial plants are better than live ones because Oscars may uproot them.2613

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivorous but primarily carnivorous. Feed high-quality cichlid pellets or sticks as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, earthworms, and krill. Vegetable matter like blanched spinach, shelled peas, or spirulina should also be offered. Avoid feeder goldfish and mammalian meats (e.g. beef heart) as they can cause health problems.3617

Company who they like around

Semi-aggressive and territorial. Best kept alone or in a bonded pair. If kept with tankmates, choose large, robust species such as large catfish, silver dollars, or other large cichlids. Avoid small or delicate fish. Oscars are not suitable for community tanks with small species. They can be kept with other Oscars only in very large tanks with careful monitoring.673

The story where it all began

The Albino Oscar is not a separate species but a captive-bred colour morph of the Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus). Through selective breeding in commercial fish farms, the recessive albino trait has been stabilised, producing fish with a white or cream body, orange or red highlights, and characteristic red eyes. This morph is now widely available and popular among aquarium enthusiasts. The wild Oscar is native to South America.21

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Albino Oscar?

Feed your Albino Oscar once a day, offering only what it can eat in a few minutes. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests daily feeding. Adjust the amount based on your fish's appetite and the food label, and check with your vet if unsure.3 Furry Diary plan

What does an Albino Oscar eat, and what should it never eat?

Your Albino Oscar enjoys high-quality cichlid pellets or sticks as a staple, plus treats like bloodworms, brine shrimp, earthworms, and blanched veggies. Never feed feeder goldfish or mammalian meats like beef heart, as these can cause health problems.3617

How much space does an Albino Oscar need?

A single adult Albino Oscar needs a minimum 75-gallon tank, while a pair or community setup requires 125 gallons or more. They are active swimmers that need plenty of open water and a sand or fine gravel bottom.2613

What temperature, light or water does an Albino Oscar need?

Keep the water temperature between 23-27°C, pH 6.0-8.0, and hardness 5-12 dGH. Albino Oscars may be sensitive to bright light, so provide shaded areas or dimmer lighting. Use a powerful filter and test water weekly.2613 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean an Albino Oscar's home?

Perform a 25-30% water change weekly, and Furry Diary's plan suggests a 30-50% change each week. Rinse the filter every two weeks. Oscars produce a lot of waste, so regular cleaning is essential for their health.632 Furry Diary plan

Can an Albino Oscar live with others?

Albino Oscars are semi-aggressive and territorial, best kept alone or in a bonded pair. If you add tankmates, choose large, robust species like large catfish or silver dollars, and avoid small or delicate fish. They can be kept with other Oscars only in very large tanks with careful monitoring.673

How long does an Albino Oscar live?

With proper care, your Albino Oscar can live 10 to 15 years. Providing a clean, spacious tank and a balanced diet will help them reach their full lifespan.254

Can I handle an Albino Oscar?

It's best not to handle your Albino Oscar, as they are sensitive and can be stressed by handling. They are active swimmers that enjoy rearranging their tank decor, so observe them instead. If you must move the fish, use a soft net and avoid touching them directly.37
