Looks how to spot one

Rounded, deep-bodied hybrid cichlid

A round, chunky fish with a small, beak-like mouth, a raised forehead and large eyes, giving it a cartoon-like look. Males usually grow a little bigger than females.12

Coloursorangeredyellowgreyorange with white or yellow patches12

Personality what they are like

Usually calm and a little shy, often hiding or cruising mid-water, but it can hold its own if pushed and will eat very small fish that fit in its mouth.12

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Moderately active swimmer that also likes places to retreat, so caves and decor are appreciated.2

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

A hearty eater, so strong filtration and regular gravel cleaning help keep the water clear of leftover food. Foods sized for its small mouth are available.1

Home where they are happiest

Sources differ on tank size: about 30 US gallons (around 115 L) for one fish plus about 10 gallons for each extra, up to a recommended 55 US gallons (around 210 L) plus 20 gallons per extra fish. Temperature about 24-27 °C (76-80 °F), pH 6.5-7.4, hardness 6-18 dGH.21

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivore. Sinking cichlid pellets as the staple, with occasional frozen treats such as brine shrimp and bloodworms.21

Company who they like around

Does well with peaceful fish of similar size, for example yoyo loaches, larger tetras, gouramis, plecos and calm cichlids. Avoid tankmates small enough to be swallowed.21

The story where it all began

The blood parrot was bred in Taiwan in the mid-1980s by crossing Central American cichlids. Its unusual round shape and bright colours made it a fixture of the aquarium trade, and breeders have since produced further colour forms and the larger 'King Kong' type.12
