Looks how to spot one

scales

Dalmatian Mollies have a slender, torpedo-shaped body covered in small scales. The base colour is silvery white or pale grey, and the fish is covered in irregular black spots that resemble the coat of a Dalmatian dog. Females are larger and rounder than males. Males have a modified anal fin called a gonopodium.243

Personality what they are like

Dalmatian Mollies are peaceful, active swimmers that spend most of their time in the middle of the water column. They are social and do best in groups of three or more. Males may chase females during breeding, but this rarely causes serious harm. They get along well with other peaceful fish that prefer hard, alkaline water.43

Daily activity how busy a day looks

These fish are moderately active and need a tank of at least 60 cm (about 60 litres) to swim freely. They enjoy a planted aquarium with open swimming areas.53

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Dalmatian Mollies are easy to care for if their water is kept hard and alkaline. Soft or acidic water weakens them and makes them prone to disease. A good filter and regular partial water changes are important. They do not need salt, but the minerals calcium and magnesium are essential for their health.31

Home where they are happiest

Water temperature 21-28°C, pH 7.0-8.5, hardness 15-30 dH. A planted tank is ideal, but the water must be hard and alkaline. They can also live in slightly brackish water. Avoid keeping them with fish that need soft, acidic water.35

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivorous with a strong preference for plant matter. Feed high-quality flake or pellet food as a staple, and supplement with blanched spinach, algae wafers, and occasional frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms. Feed small amounts once daily, only what they can eat in 2-3 minutes.432

Company who they like around

Peaceful and social. Keep in groups of at least three, with several females per male to reduce harassment during breeding. Good tankmates include other mollies, rainbowfish, and hard-water-tolerant barbs and tetras. Not recommended for general community tanks with soft-water fish.43

The story where it all began

The Dalmatian Molly is a man-made hybrid, not a wild species. It was created by crossing the common short-finned molly (Poecilia sphenops) with the sailfin molly (Poecilia latipinna or Poecilia velifera). The goal was to produce a hardy, attractive fish with a striking black-and-white spotted pattern that resembles a Dalmatian dog. This hybrid has become very popular in the aquarium trade because of its beauty, peaceful nature, and ease of breeding. The Dalmatian pattern is a colour variety that does not occur in wild mollies.1236

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Dalmatian Molly?

Feed your Dalmatian Molly small amounts once daily, only what they can eat in 2-3 minutes. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests feeding once or twice a day. Overfeeding can harm water quality, so stick to a light schedule.432 Furry Diary plan

What does a Dalmatian Molly eat, and what should it never eat?

They are omnivores with a strong preference for plant matter. Offer high-quality flake or pellet food as a staple, plus blanched spinach, algae wafers, and occasional frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms. Never feed them foods meant for soft-water fish or anything with artificial additives.432

How much space does a Dalmatian Molly need?

They need a tank of at least 60 cm (about 60 litres) to swim freely. A planted aquarium with open swimming areas is ideal. This gives them enough room to be moderately active and social.53

What temperature, light or water does a Dalmatian Molly need?

Keep water temperature between 21-28°C, pH 7.0-8.5, and hardness 15-30 dH. They need hard, alkaline water; soft or acidic water weakens them. A planted tank with moderate lighting works well, and they can also tolerate slightly brackish water.35

How often should I clean a Dalmatian Molly's home?

Furry Diary's starting plan recommends a 25% water change weekly, along with weekly glass cleaning and water testing. Rinse the filter monthly in old tank water, never tap water. Regular cleaning keeps their hard, alkaline water stable.31 Furry Diary plan

Can a Dalmatian Molly live with others?

Yes, they are peaceful and social, best kept in groups of three or more with several females per male. Good tankmates include other mollies, rainbowfish, and hard-water-tolerant barbs and tetras. Avoid soft-water fish.43

How long does a Dalmatian Molly live?

With proper care, they typically live 2 to 5 years. Keeping their water hard and alkaline and feeding a balanced diet helps them reach the upper end of that range.12

Can I handle a Dalmatian Molly?

It's best not to handle them. They are delicate fish with small scales, and handling can stress or injure them. Enjoy watching them swim in their tank instead.
