Body length excluding the oversized pectoral fins; total length including fins can appear larger.
Looks how to spot one
Scales and fins
The Dumbo Betta has the typical elongated, laterally compressed body of a domestic Betta splendens, but its pectoral fins are dramatically enlarged, reaching one third to half the body length. These fins are often ruffled at the edges and may be white, translucent, or match the body colour. The trait appears across many tail types including halfmoon, plakat, and delta, and the body can be solid or patterned.15
Personality what they are like
Males are highly territorial and aggressive toward other male bettas and any fish that resembles them; they will flare, chase, and bite. Females can sometimes be kept in groups with care. The Dumbo Betta is generally slower and less aggressive in practice than short-finned bettas because the large fins make chasing more tiring, but it still requires solitary housing for males. It is curious and interactive with its owner.713
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Low to moderate activity; the fish is a slow swimmer due to its heavy fins and needs resting spots near the water surface. Gentle water flow is essential to prevent exhaustion. Provide broad leaves or a betta hammock for perching.13
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Regular water changes (25% weekly) and pristine water quality are vital because the large pectoral fins are prone to fin rot and fungal infections. Use a sponge filter or baffled hang-on-back to keep current gentle. Decor must be smooth (test with pantyhose) to avoid tearing fins. A tight lid is required as bettas can jump.13
Home where they are happiest
Minimum 5 gallons (19 litres), with 10 gallons (38 litres) recommended for a male. Water temperature 27-30°C (81-86°F), pH around 5.5-7.0, very low current. Provide live or silk plants, floating cover, and resting spots near the surface. The species is native to shallow, warm, acidic waters of Southeast Asia and tolerates low oxygen thanks to its labyrinth organ.183
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Carnivorous; feed high-quality betta pellets (2-4 pellets twice daily) as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia a few times a week. Avoid sinking foods as the fish struggles to chase them. Do not feed plant-based fillers.13
Company who they like around
Males must be housed alone; they will fight other males to the death and cannot cohabit with females except for supervised breeding. Suitable tankmates in a 10+ gallon tank include nerite snails, mystery snails, kuhli loaches, and pygmy corydoras. Avoid fin-nipping fish such as tiger barbs, serpae tetras, and danios. Shrimp may be eaten. The Dumbo Betta is not venomous and is legal to keep in most countries.13
The story where it all began
The Dumbo Betta is a captive-bred variety of Betta splendens that first appeared in Thai breeding farms around the 2010s. Breeders selected for a mutation that causes the pectoral fins to grow much larger than normal, resembling elephant ears. The trait was then crossed into popular tail types such as halfmoon, plakat, and delta, as well as colour strains like koi and dragon scale. Unlike the wild-type betta, which has small, inconspicuous pectoral fins, the Dumbo's fins are a deliberate ornamental feature. The species itself has been domesticated for nearly 100 years, originally bred in Thailand for fighting and later for beauty.18

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Dumbo Betta?
Your Dumbo Betta is a carnivore and enjoys high-quality betta pellets. Feed 2 to 4 pellets twice daily, and offer treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp a few times a week. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests feeding every day.13 Furry Diary plan
What does a Dumbo Betta eat, and what should it never eat?
A Dumbo Betta eats betta pellets, frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Never feed sinking foods because the fish struggles to chase them, and avoid plant-based fillers.13
How much space does a Dumbo Betta need?
A minimum of 5 gallons (19 litres) is needed, but 10 gallons (38 litres) is recommended for a male. This gives your slow-swimming beauty room to explore and rest near the surface.183
What temperature, light or water does a Dumbo Betta need?
Keep the water warm at 27-30°C (81-86°F) with a pH of 5.5 to 7.0 and a very gentle current. Provide live or silk plants and resting spots near the surface. Light needs vary; ask a good breeder or exotic-pet vet for guidance.183
How often should I clean a Dumbo Betta's home?
Change about 25% of the water every week, test the water weekly, and rinse the filter monthly. Furry Diary's starting plan follows this schedule to keep your betta healthy.13 Furry Diary plan
Can a Dumbo Betta live with others?
Males must live alone as they are territorial and aggressive toward other males. Females can sometimes be kept in groups with care. In a 10+ gallon tank, peaceful tankmates like nerite snails or kuhli loaches can work, but avoid fin-nipping fish.13
How long does a Dumbo Betta live?
With proper care, your Dumbo Betta can live between 2 and 5 years. Enjoy its curious and interactive personality during that time.324
Can I handle a Dumbo Betta?
Handling is not recommended for this delicate fish; it can cause stress and injury to its large fins. Observe and interact through the glass instead. For specific advice, consult an exotic-pet vet.
