The story where it all began

Flowerhorns were bred in Malaysia and Taiwan from the early 1990s by mixing several Central American cichlids with blood parrots. The fish became a craze in Asia in the late 1990s, prized for its domed forehead, which is linked with good luck in feng shui, and breeders have since developed many named strains.12

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Flowerhorn Cichlid?

Feed your Flowerhorn Cichlid once daily, as Furry Diary's starting plan suggests. Offer only what it can eat in a couple of minutes to avoid overfeeding and water quality issues.2 Furry Diary plan

What does a Flowerhorn Cichlid eat, and what should it never eat?

Your Flowerhorn is an omnivore and thrives on a good cichlid pellet as a base, with treats like bloodworms, shrimp, worms, or crickets. Never feed it anything not listed here, and always check with your vet for specific dietary concerns.2

How much space does a Flowerhorn Cichlid need?

A single Flowerhorn needs at least about 70 US gallons (around 265 L), and a pair needs about 140 US gallons (around 530 L). This active, strong swimmer requires plenty of open space to stay healthy.2

What temperature, light or water does a Flowerhorn Cichlid need?

Keep the water temperature between 27-30°C (80-86°F), with a pH of 7-8 and hardness of 8-20 dGH. Lighting needs vary, so ask a good breeder or exotic-pet vet for specifics.2

How often should I clean a Flowerhorn Cichlid's home?

Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a weekly water change of about 30 to 50%, along with a weekly water test and a filter rinse every two weeks. This keeps the tank clean for your large, messy fish. Furry Diary plan

Can a Flowerhorn Cichlid live with others?

Flowerhorns are usually kept alone due to their bold, territorial nature. Very large, robust tankmates like plecos are sometimes tried, but compatibility is never guaranteed.2

How long does a Flowerhorn Cichlid live?

With proper care, your Flowerhorn Cichlid can live 11 to 12 years. Providing a large tank and good water quality helps it reach this lifespan.2

Can I handle a Flowerhorn Cichlid?

Handling is not recommended as it can stress the fish and harm its protective slime coat. Enjoy watching its friendly, responsive behavior toward you instead.2
