Looks how to spot one

Scales and fins

Giant bettas have the same sleek, elongated body shape as standard bettas, but they are noticeably larger and heavier. Their fins can be long and flowing or shorter, depending on the line, and they come in a wide range of colours and patterns.14

ColoursRedBlueTurquoiseWhiteBlackMarbleKoi patterns6

Personality what they are like

Giant bettas are territorial and can be aggressive, especially males towards other males. They may be calmer than standard bettas in some cases, but they still need to be kept alone or with carefully chosen tank mates.134

Daily activity how busy a day looks

They need plenty of swimming space and enrichment. A roomy tank with gentle filtration, plants, and resting spots near the surface encourages natural exploring and patrolling.4

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Regular water changes and stable water quality are essential. Avoid strong currents, and provide a secure lid as bettas can jump. Gentle decor and soft plants help prevent fin injury.4

Home where they are happiest

A heated, filtered aquarium of at least 10 gallons (about 38 litres) is recommended for one fish, with many keepers preferring 10 to 15 gallons. Water temperature should be around 24 to 30°C (72 to 86°F) and pH close to neutral or slightly acidic (6.0 to 7.5).752

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Giant bettas are carnivores and need a high-protein diet. Feed quality betta pellets as a base, with frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or mosquito larvae for variety. Portion control is important to avoid overfeeding.134

Company who they like around

Males are highly territorial and should be kept alone. Females can also be aggressive towards each other in confined spaces. They may be kept with other peaceful fish in a large enough tank, but caution is needed.63

The story where it all began

The giant betta is not a separate species but a selectively bred size variant of Betta splendens. The trait is recessive and was developed in Thailand, with some sources tracing it to early-2000s crosses with a larger wild relative, Betta anabantoides. Through careful line breeding, the size gene was stabilised in domestic strains. Unlike the plain species, which typically grows to about 6 to 8 cm, giants can reach 12 to 14 cm or more, making them roughly twice the size of standard bettas.1326

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Giant Betta?

Feed your Giant Betta once daily, as Furry Diary's starting plan suggests. Offer a high-protein diet with quality betta pellets and occasional frozen or live treats like bloodworms. Be careful not to overfeed, as portion control is important.134 Furry Diary plan

What does a Giant Betta eat, and what should it never eat?

Giant bettas are carnivores and thrive on a high-protein diet. Feed quality betta pellets as a base, with frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or mosquito larvae for variety. Avoid overfeeding and never give foods that are not designed for carnivorous fish, such as plant-based flakes or large chunks that could cause digestive issues.134

How much space does a Giant Betta need?

A single Giant Betta needs a heated, filtered aquarium of at least 10 gallons (about 38 litres), with many keepers preferring 10 to 15 gallons. This gives them plenty of swimming space and room for enrichment like plants and resting spots near the surface.752

What temperature, light or water does a Giant Betta need?

Keep the water temperature between 24 and 30°C (72 to 86°F) and aim for a pH close to neutral or slightly acidic, around 6.0 to 7.5. Lighting needs vary, so observe your fish and adjust as needed; a gentle current and stable water quality are more important. Furry Diary's plan includes daily temperature checks and weekly water tests.752 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Giant Betta's home?

Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a weekly water change of about 25% and a monthly filter rinse. Regular water changes and stable water quality are essential to keep your betta healthy. Always use gentle cleaning methods to avoid stressing your fish.4 Furry Diary plan

Can a Giant Betta live with others?

Males are highly territorial and should be kept alone. Females can also be aggressive in confined spaces, but they may be kept with other peaceful fish in a large enough tank. Caution is needed, and it's often safest to house them alone.63

How long does a Giant Betta live?

With proper care, a Giant Betta can live between 2 and 6 years. Providing a stable environment, a good diet, and regular maintenance will help them reach the upper end of that range.154

Can I handle a Giant Betta?

Handling is not recommended as bettas are delicate and can be easily stressed or injured. It's best to observe them in their tank and only handle them when absolutely necessary, such as during tank cleaning. For specific advice, consult an exotic-pet vet.
