Looks how to spot one

scales

The hi-fin platy has a tall, sail-like dorsal fin that curves backward, making it slower than standard platies. The body is laterally compressed and deep-bodied, typical of the species.2

Personality what they are like

Hi-fin platies are very peaceful and get along with most community fish. Males may pester females, so it is best to keep two or more females per male to spread attention.43

Daily activity how busy a day looks

They occupy the middle and upper regions of the aquarium and can jump, so a secure lid is recommended.1

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Because of the tall dorsal fin, hi-fin platies are more prone to fin rot and skin diseases. Avoid sharp decor, use smooth substrates and gentle plants like Java Fern and Amazon Swords. Ensure moderate water flow.2

Home where they are happiest

Minimum tank size 10 gallons. Temperature 64-77°F (18-25°C), pH 7.0-8.2 (ideally 7.0-7.5), hardness 9-19 dGH. Prefers slow-moving water with planted areas. A secure lid is needed to prevent jumping.15

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivore. Feed high-quality flakes or pellets 4 times a week, plus frozen or freeze-dried foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, daphnia or bloodworms once or twice a week. Include spirulina or algae wafers weekly for digestion.21

Company who they like around

Very peaceful and suitable for community tanks with mollies, swordtails, tetras and other peaceful species. Keep more females than males to reduce harassment. They are shoaling fish and do best in groups.41

The story where it all began

The hi-fin platy is not a separate species but a selectively bred variety of the southern platyfish (Xiphophorus maculatus), and occasionally from Xiphophorus variatus. It was developed through artificial selection for its tall, sail-like dorsal fin, which distinguishes it from the standard short-finned platy and other ornamental variants like the veiltail and tuxedo. Many commercial hi-fin platies are the result of hybridisation between X. maculatus, X. variatus and X. hellerii (swordtail).26

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Hi-fin Platy?

Furry Diary's starting plan is to feed small amounts once or twice a day. Offer high-quality flakes or pellets 4 times a week, plus frozen or freeze-dried treats like brine shrimp once or twice a week.21 Furry Diary plan

What does a Hi-fin Platy eat, and what should it never eat?

They are omnivores and enjoy high-quality flakes or pellets, plus frozen or freeze-dried foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, daphnia or bloodworms. Include spirulina or algae wafers weekly. Avoid any foods not meant for fish, and never feed them human food or live prey that could carry disease.21

How much space does a Hi-fin Platy need?

A minimum tank size of 10 gallons is recommended. They are active swimmers that occupy the middle and upper regions, so a secure lid is needed to prevent jumping.15

What temperature, light or water does a Hi-fin Platy need?

Keep the water temperature between 64-77°F (18-25°C), pH 7.0-8.2 (ideally 7.0-7.5), and hardness 9-19 dGH. They prefer slow-moving water with planted areas and moderate light.15

How often should I clean a Hi-fin Platy's home?

Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a weekly 25% water change, weekly glass cleaning, and monthly filter rinsing in old tank water. Test water parameters weekly to keep conditions stable. Furry Diary plan

Can a Hi-fin Platy live with others?

Yes, they are very peaceful and do well in community tanks with mollies, swordtails, tetras and other peaceful species. Keep two or more females per male to reduce harassment, and they are shoaling fish best kept in groups.41

How long does a Hi-fin Platy live?

With proper care, they typically live 2 to 4 years. A stable environment and good diet help them reach their full lifespan.2

Can I handle a Hi-fin Platy?

It is best not to handle them as they are delicate and can be stressed by handling. Use a net only when necessary, and always support their body gently.
