Looks how to spot one

Scales

The Leopard Discus has a laterally compressed, round body typical of discus fish. Its most striking feature is the intricate, high-contrast spotted pattern: a flurry of small dark spots scattered over a lighter base colour that can be turquoise, green, pale blue or deep blue. The intensity of the pattern often increases as the fish matures.32

Personality what they are like

Leopard Discus are very peaceful and social fish. They are best kept in groups of at least five or six individuals, where they establish a calm social order. They are generally docile toward other species and should be housed with other peaceful, heat-tolerant tank mates such as cardinal tetras, rummy nose tetras and Corydoras catfish. Avoid fin-nipping or aggressive fish that may stress them.132

Daily activity how busy a day looks

They are shoaling fish that appreciate open swimming space combined with hiding spots. Gentle water flow is preferred to mimic their slow-moving natural habitats.32

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Care level is considered difficult. They require warm, clean and stable water conditions with a mature biological filter. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons (about 280 litres) is recommended. Regular water changes and careful monitoring of water parameters are essential.254

Home where they are happiest

Provide a well-planted tank with smooth sand or fine gravel substrate to protect their delicate barbels. Include driftwood, smooth rocks and vertical plants such as Vallisneria or Amazon Swords for security. Gentle filtration and low water flow are important. They are sensitive to water quality, so stable conditions are a must.32

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivorous with a preference for protein-rich foods. Offer high-quality flake or pellet food, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp and beef heart. They also benefit from plant-based foods like spirulina and blanched vegetables. Feed small amounts several times a day.32

Company who they like around

Highly social and should be kept in groups of at least five or six individuals. They are peaceful and can be housed with other calm species such as cardinal tetras, rummy nose tetras, Corydoras catfish and small plecos. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping tank mates.132

The story where it all began

The Leopard Discus is a selectively bred variety derived from wild green discus (Symphysodon tarzoo). It was developed by breeders in Hong Kong over about a decade through careful selective breeding of two naturally occurring variants of red spotted green discus from different areas of the Amazon. Unlike some other discus strains, it is not the result of genetic mutation but of deliberate selection for its distinctive leopard-like pattern.12

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Leopard Discus?

Feed your Leopard Discus small amounts several times a day for best health. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests offering food once or twice daily, but you can adjust based on your fish's appetite. Always follow the food label and ask your vet for precise amounts.32 Furry Diary plan

What does a Leopard Discus eat, and what should it never eat?

Your Leopard Discus enjoys a varied diet of high-quality flake or pellet food, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and beef heart. They also benefit from plant-based foods like spirulina and blanched vegetables. Avoid feeding anything that could spoil the water or harm them; for specific foods to never give, ask your vet or a good breeder.32

How much space does a Leopard Discus need?

A Leopard Discus needs a minimum tank size of 75 gallons (about 280 litres) to thrive. This gives them room to swim and establish their social order. A larger tank is even better for a group.254

What temperature, light or water does a Leopard Discus need?

Leopard Discus require warm, clean, and stable water conditions with gentle filtration and low water flow. Exact temperature and light preferences vary; ask your exotic-pet vet or a good breeder for specific numbers. Furry Diary recommends checking the temperature daily and testing water weekly.32 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Leopard Discus's home?

Clean your Leopard Discus's tank weekly by changing about 25% of the water and wiping the glass. Rinse the filter once a month in old tank water, never tap water. Regular cleaning keeps their environment stable and healthy.25 Furry Diary plan

Can a Leopard Discus live with others?

Yes, Leopard Discus are very peaceful and social fish that do best in groups of at least five or six. They can live with other calm species like cardinal tetras, rummy nose tetras, and Corydoras catfish. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping tank mates that could stress them.132

How long does a Leopard Discus live?

With proper care, a Leopard Discus can live between 10 and 15 years. Providing stable water conditions and a good diet helps them reach their full lifespan.325

Can I handle a Leopard Discus?

It is best not to handle your Leopard Discus as they are delicate fish with sensitive scales and barbels. Handling can cause stress or injury. Enjoy watching them swim peacefully in their tank instead.
