Looks how to spot one

scales

The body is very deep and compressed, with a long, sickle-shaped white dorsal fin. Adults have a sharp bony projection in front of each eye, larger in males. The snout is narrow and protruding. The skin feels like fine sandpaper due to tiny scales with erect ctenii.2

Personality what they are like

Generally peaceful. They can be kept in pairs or small groups in large tanks, but should not be housed with overly aggressive species.4

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Active swimmers that need plenty of open space to graze and evade. A long, deep tank is more important than height.5

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Very difficult to keep. They are extremely sensitive to poor water quality, so the tank must be fully cycled and stable before introduction. A quarantine tank is recommended to help them settle and start feeding without competition.45

Home where they are happiest

Minimum 380 litres (100 gallons) for a single fish, and at least 757 litres (200 gallons) for a pair. The tank should have plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. They are not ideal for reef tanks as they may pick at SPS corals. Water quality must be pristine. They occur naturally from shallows to depths of 180 m.645

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivorous but primarily feeds on sponges in the wild. In captivity they need a varied diet including live or frozen marine foods, marine algae, nori, spirulina, and meaty items like mysid shrimp and clams. Live rock provides essential grazing. Feeding is the most challenging aspect of their care.45

Company who they like around

They are often seen in pairs or small groups in the wild, and can be kept in multiples in large tanks. Avoid aggressive tank mates. All specimens in the trade are wild-caught; there is no recorded captive breeding.45

The story where it all began

The Moorish Idol has been known to science since Linnaeus described it in 1758. It has long been prized in the aquarium trade for its striking appearance, but its reputation as one of the most difficult marine fish to keep is well earned. High mortality in captivity has led to import restrictions in some European countries, such as Germany. Despite this, it remains a sought-after species for expert aquarists.12

The care rhythm Furry Diary remembers it for you

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Moorish Idol?

Furry Diary's starting plan is to offer small amounts once or twice a day. Because feeding is the most challenging part of their care, you should watch your fish closely and adjust based on its appetite. For exact amounts, check the food label and ask your vet.45 Furry Diary plan

What does a Moorish Idol eat, and what should it never eat?

They are omnivores that need a varied diet of live or frozen marine foods, marine algae, nori, spirulina, and meaty items like mysid shrimp and clams. Live rock is essential for grazing. Avoid feeding anything not listed in these guidelines, and never give them freshwater foods or items with preservatives.45

How much space does a Moorish Idol need?

A single Moorish Idol needs at least 380 litres (100 gallons), and a pair needs at least 757 litres (200 gallons). The tank should be long and deep rather than tall, with plenty of open swimming space and live rock for grazing.645

What temperature, light or water does a Moorish Idol need?

Water quality must be pristine, with stable temperature and salinity. Furry Diary suggests checking temperature daily and salinity weekly, and topping up evaporation with fresh RO water. For exact temperature and salinity ranges, ask your exotic-pet vet or a good breeder.45 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Moorish Idol's home?

Furry Diary's plan includes a weekly glass cleaning and a 10-20% water change every two weeks. Test water weekly to ensure it stays stable. Moorish Idols are extremely sensitive to poor water quality, so consistent cleaning is vital.45 Furry Diary plan

Can a Moorish Idol live with others?

Yes, they are generally peaceful and can be kept in pairs or small groups in large tanks. Avoid aggressive tank mates. All Moorish Idols in the trade are wild-caught, so introduce them carefully.45

How long does a Moorish Idol live?

Their lifespan varies greatly and depends on excellent care. In the wild they can live many years, but in captivity they are very difficult to keep. For a more accurate estimate, ask your vet or a breeder.45

Can I handle a Moorish Idol?

No, you should never handle a Moorish Idol. They are delicate fish with tiny, sandpaper-like scales, and handling can damage their slime coat and cause stress. Always use a net if you need to move them.2
