Personality what they are like

Ogon Koi are docile, social and curious. They quickly learn to hand-feed and often become the boldest fish in the pond. They are peaceful with other non-aggressive species of similar size.43

Daily activity how busy a day looks

They need a large pond with plenty of swimming space. A minimum of 1000 gallons (about 3800 litres) is recommended for healthy adults. They are active swimmers and benefit from deep water (at least 1.5 m in cold climates) and shaded areas to avoid sunburn.23

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Maintain excellent water quality with strong filtration. Perform regular water changes and monitor parameters: temperature 50-78°F (10-25°C), pH 7.0-8.5, ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm, nitrate under 40 ppm. In winter, reduce feeding as metabolism slows. Provide shade to prevent sunburn.23

Home where they are happiest

Outdoor pond with clean, well-oxygenated water, depth of at least 1.5 m in cold regions, and plenty of shade. They are coldwater fish but prefer 15-25°C (59-77°F). Avoid long periods below 10°C (50°F) as their immune system weakens. Not suitable for indoor aquariums long-term.13

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivorous. Feed high-quality koi pellets (at least 30% protein) twice daily during warm months. They also enjoy aquatic insects, algae, plants, and occasional treats like shrimp. Reduce or stop feeding in winter when water temperature drops below 10°C.32

Company who they like around

Very social fish that thrive in groups. They can be kept with other peaceful pond fish of similar size. Koi are not aggressive and enjoy the company of their own kind. No special legal restrictions for keeping Ogon Koi in most countries, but always check local regulations regarding non-native species.34

The story where it all began

Ogon Koi are a relatively modern variety of ornamental carp, developed in Japan in the early 20th century. Unlike the patterned koi that came from 19th-century Niigata breeding, Ogon were bred for a single, solid metallic colour. Their name means 'gold' in Japanese, and they are prized for their brilliant, mirror-like sheen. They are classed as Hikarimuji (single-colour metallic) in koi shows. Today they are one of the most popular koi varieties worldwide.14
