The Snakeskin Discus has a round, disc-shaped body that is laterally compressed. Its most striking feature is a fine pattern of thin lines or striations covering the body, often in red or blue on a tan background. The gill plates have a unique pattern of fine lines and dots, and most individuals show 14 vertical bars.52
Personality what they are like
Snakeskin Discus are generally peaceful and shy. They become slightly territorial only when breeding. They are schooling fish that form close family groups and can be very bold and personable with their caretakers in a well-planted tank. A solitary discus tends to be withdrawn and skittish.416
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Low to moderate. They are not powerful swimmers and prefer gentle water flow. They need plenty of hiding spots among plants, driftwood or rocks to feel secure.1
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Advanced care level. They require pristine water conditions with weekly water changes to keep nitrates below 10 ppm. A canister filter is recommended. They are extremely intolerant of ammonia or nitrite. Drip acclimation is advised when introducing them to a new tank.14
Home where they are happiest
Minimum 75 gallons for a group of adults. Water temperature 82-84°F (28-29°C), pH 5.0-7.0, KH 1-4. Soft, slightly acidic water is ideal. A well-planted aquarium with gentle filtration and plenty of cover is essential. They are not suitable for community tanks with boisterous or aggressive species.134
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Omnivorous but needs a protein-rich diet. Offer high-quality frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and krill. Avoid beef heart and mammalian meats. Spirulina-based foods are also beneficial. Variety is key for colour and health.14
Company who they like around
Highly social. Must be kept in groups of at least two, but larger groups are better. They form strong pair bonds and a nuclear family structure. During breeding, pairs become territorial but should not be separated from their fry, as the young feed on parental mucus.42
The story where it all began
The Snakeskin Discus is a selectively bred colour variety of the wild green discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus). It was developed by aquarists through generations of careful breeding to enhance the fine striping pattern that gives it the 'snakeskin' name. Unlike the wild type, which has a more solid colour, the snakeskin variety displays intricate lines and dots, especially on the gill plates. It has been used extensively in crosses to create other popular varieties such as Leopard Snakeskin and Blue Diamond Snakeskin.52
