Girgentana Goat

Capra aegagrus hircus

Also called Nturcina, Girgenti goat

breedShort profile

From Sicily, Italy, specifically the province of Agrigento (formerly called Girgenti). The breed may have been brought to the island by Greek colonists around 700 BC or by Arab invaders in the 8th century AD, and is thought to descend partly from the markhor (Capra falconeri) of Central Asia.123

Looks how to spot one

hair

The Girgentana has a medium-length, coarse white coat with brown or fawn speckling on the head and throat. Both sexes sport a long beard and a pair of tall, corkscrew-twisted horns that rise almost vertically from the forehead, sometimes reaching 70 cm in males.724

Personality what they are like

Girgentana goats are lively, intelligent and companionable, and generally quite docile. They are active and curious, but males can become aggressive during the breeding season when competing for dominance.46

Daily activity how busy a day looks

These goats need plenty of space to roam and browse. They are excellent foragers on rough terrain but their long spiral horns can get tangled in bushes or fencing, so open pasture with sturdy, horn-safe fencing is ideal.46

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Routine hoof trimming and parasite control are needed. Their coarse coat requires little grooming, but regular checks for horn injuries or entanglement are important. A well-built shelter protects them from rain and cold, as goats are prone to pneumonia if they get wet and chilled.6

Home where they are happiest

A secure pen with fencing at least 4 feet high, preferably electric, to deter predators and prevent escapes. The shelter must be dry and draught-free. They tolerate high heat and dry conditions well, but need shade and fresh water at all times.6

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Girgentana goats are browsers that thrive on pasture, hay and forage. Supplement with commercial goat feed or grains, but avoid overfeeding grain to prevent bloat. Clean water must always be available.6

Company who they like around

Goats are highly social animals and should never be kept alone. Girgentanas are companionable and can live with other goats or even cattle. They are not known to be venomous, protected or illegal to keep in most countries, but as an endangered breed they are rare outside Italy and may be difficult to obtain.46

The story where it all began

The Girgentana goat is an ancient breed from the Agrigento province of Sicily, named after the old Sicilian name for the city, Girgenti. Its striking spiral horns resemble those of the markhor, leading experts to believe it may have been brought to the island by Greek colonists or Arab invaders. Traditionally, farmers kept these goats in town houses and sold milk door to door, often using it for infants and the elderly. In the 1950s there were over 30,000 Girgentana goats, but modern hygiene laws and the rise of pasteurised milk caused a steep decline. By the early 2000s fewer than 500 remained, making it one of the rarest goat breeds in Europe. Conservation efforts, including a Slow Food Presidium, are now helping to revive the breed.318

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Girgentana Goat, and what should it eat?

Feed your Girgentana Goat daily with fresh pasture, hay, and forage, plus a supplement of commercial goat feed or grains. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests offering fresh food and water every day. Avoid overfeeding grain to prevent bloat, and always keep clean water available.6 Furry Diary plan

Which foods and plants are dangerous for a Girgentana Goat?

Many common human foods are dangerous, including chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and avocado. Overfeeding grain can also cause bloat, so stick to pasture and a balanced goat feed. For a complete list, always consult your vet.96

How much space and land does a Girgentana Goat need?

Your Girgentana needs plenty of open pasture to roam and browse, with sturdy fencing at least 4 feet high to prevent escapes and tangling of their long spiral horns. They are excellent foragers on rough terrain but require horn-safe fencing and enough space to stay active.46

What kind of shelter does a Girgentana Goat need?

A dry, draught-free shelter is essential to protect them from rain and cold, as they are prone to pneumonia if wet and chilled. Provide shade and fresh water at all times, and secure the pen with electric fencing for predator deterrence.6

How do I look after a Girgentana Goat's hooves or feet?

Routine hoof trimming is vital for their health. Furry Diary's starting plan recommends trimming every 42 days. Check hooves regularly for overgrowth or discomfort, and ask your vet or a farrier for proper technique.6 Furry Diary plan

Does a Girgentana Goat need grooming or shearing?

Their coarse coat requires little grooming, but regular checks for horn injuries or entanglement are important. Shearing is not needed, but keeping their living space clean helps maintain their coat naturally.6

Can a Girgentana Goat live alone?

No, they are highly social animals and should never live alone. They thrive with other goats or even cattle as companions, and Furry Diary's plan includes company every day. A lonely goat can become stressed and unwell.46 Furry Diary plan

How long does a Girgentana Goat live?

The typical lifespan varies depending on care and genetics. For specific information, please ask a reputable breeder or your veterinarian.

Is a Girgentana Goat good with children?

They are generally docile and companionable, which can be good with supervised children. However, males may become aggressive during breeding season, so always supervise interactions and ask your breeder for advice.46

What regular vet care does a Girgentana Goat need?

Regular vet care includes parasite prevention as your vet recommends, routine hoof trimming every 42 days, and weekly mineral checks as per Furry Diary's plan. Watch for horn injuries and signs of pneumonia, and schedule annual health checkups.6 Furry Diary plan
