The coat can be long or short, with a fringed appearance along the back and hind legs. The body is fine-boned and slender, with a straight or slightly dished face and erect ears that turn up a little at the tips. The skin is a shade of gold, never pink or grey.453
Personality what they are like
Royal Golden Guernsey goats are known for being quiet, docile and affectionate. They are often described as ideal household goats because of their gentle nature and adaptability to living close to people.453
Daily activity how busy a day looks
They are adaptable to free range or stall feeding and can be kept on small plots with just a house and a fenced yard. They enjoy browsing and are choosy eaters, which makes them useful for conservation grazing.56
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Basic goat care applies: regular hoof trimming, parasite control, and shelter from wet weather. Their coat may need occasional brushing, especially if long-haired. They cope well with a damp, temperate climate.3
Home where they are happiest
A secure, dry shelter and a fenced yard are sufficient. They are well suited to small holdings and can be kept as house goats. No special restrictions are noted, but as a rare breed, owners should support conservation efforts.53
Food basics what goes in the bowl
They eat hay, grass, browse and a balanced goat ration. Their milk yield is moderate but efficient relative to their food intake. Fresh water and minerals should always be available.43
Company who they like around
Goats are herd animals and should not be kept alone. They thrive with at least one companion. Their docile nature makes them good with people, but they need goat company for proper social development.4
The story where it all began
Golden goats have been known on the island of Guernsey for at least two hundred years, with the first written mention in an 1826 guidebook. The modern breed owes its survival to Miriam Milbourne, who rediscovered golden scrub goats in 1924 and began keeping them in 1937. During the German occupation of the Channel Islands in the Second World War, she hid her goats indoors to protect them from being slaughtered. After the war she started a breeding programme, and in the 1950s the Guernsey Goat Society opened a special section of its herd book for them. In 2024 the breed was granted the title 'Royal' by King Charles III. Today it is still considered at risk, with fewer than 2000 animals worldwide.216
