Personality what they are like

LaManchas are known for their calm, docile and friendly nature. They are intelligent, easy to handle and often form strong bonds with their human caretakers. Their sweet temperament makes them a favourite for families and hobby keepers.643

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Moderate activity level. They need daily space to walk, climb, browse and interact. Enrichment such as platforms, logs and browsing opportunities helps keep them physically fit and mentally engaged. Boredom can lead to fence testing and escape behaviour.4

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Routine hoof care, parasite control and vaccination are important. Their short coat requires minimal grooming. Provide dry, clean housing and avoid overcrowding. Quarantine new arrivals and work with a vet on a preventive health plan.4

Home where they are happiest

Secure fencing is essential as they are social and may follow people around. They need a dry shelter protected from weather and predators. A dry lot with enrichment and safe pasture rotation works well. They adapt to different climates.643

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A forage-first diet based on good-quality grass hay or browse, with clean water and a goat-specific mineral supplement available free choice. Goats need higher copper than sheep, so sheep mineral is not suitable. Selenium needs vary by region; consult a vet.46

Company who they like around

LaManchas are herd animals and must have at least one compatible goat companion. Isolation often leads to stress, calling and fence challenging. They are affectionate and enjoy human interaction, but should never be kept alone.64

The story where it all began

The LaMancha goat was developed in the United States during the early 20th century, primarily by Mrs Eula Fay Frey in California and later Oregon. She bred short-eared goats from local herds (descended from Spanish mission goats) with imported dairy breeds such as Nubian, French Alpine, Toggenburg, Oberhasli and Murcian. The breed was officially recognised on 27 January 1958 with about 200 foundation animals. Its most distinctive feature is the very short ear pinnae, which come in two types: 'gopher' ears (up to 2.5 cm, almost absent) and 'elf' ears (up to 5 cm with some cartilage).1273
