Looks how to spot one

fleece

Pygora goats have three fleece types. Type A is like kid mohair, Type B blends mohair and cashmere, and Type C is a cashmere-like down that is brushed out. The fleece does not coarsen with age and is harvested by shearing or combing.563

Personality what they are like

Pygoras are friendly, alert, curious and easy to handle. They combine the docile nature of Angora goats with the spunk and playfulness of Pygmy goats. They enjoy spending time with people and are described as having the curiosity of a cat.435

Daily activity how busy a day looks

They need space to move, climb and explore, ideally a paddock with shelter and safe fencing. Boredom can lead to noisy or destructive behaviour.4

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Fleece must be harvested annually by shearing or brushing. Regular hoof trims are essential. They need vaccinations and deworming as advised by a vet. During shearing they need good bedding and shelter.46

Home where they are happiest

A secure, dry shelter with good ventilation and bedding. They require safe fencing (goats are escape artists). Access to clean fresh water and goat minerals is vital. They are not suitable for indoor living.4

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Good quality hay or pasture and browse. Free-choice goat minerals and clean, fresh water. A vet should advise on any supplemental feeding.4

Company who they like around

They are herd animals and must have at least one goat companion. A lone goat becomes lonely, noisy and unhappy.4

The story where it all began

The Pygora goat was created in 1980 by Katharine Jorgensen in Oregon, United States. She crossed a registered American Angora goat with a registered Pygmy goat to produce a medium-sized fibre goat whose fine fleece does not coarsen with age. The first cross is called an F1; the second generation is considered the true Pygora. The breed was named by blending 'Pygmy' and 'Angora'. The Pygora Breeders Association was formed in 1987 to maintain the registry and breed standard.132
