Looks how to spot one
Short, fine hair
The Saanen has a short, fine white or cream coat. Some individuals may have longer hair along the spine or hindquarters. The skin is white or pale, and the face is straight or slightly dished. Ears are erect and pointed. Horns may be present or absent, and tassels are sometimes seen.14
Personality what they are like
Saanen goats are calm, gentle and enjoy human company. They are easy to handle and train, responding well to affection and positive reinforcement. They prefer routine and are well suited to family life and hobby keeping.135
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Saanens need a secure, spacious grazing area with good fencing at least 1.2 metres high. They are not adapted for long hikes or mountain roaming, but they do enjoy browsing in a home pasture. Rotating pastures helps control parasites.53
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Hooves need trimming every 4-6 weeks to prevent overgrowth and lameness. Provide dry, draught-free shelter with straw or wood shavings bedding. Clean bedding regularly. Their pale skin is prone to sunburn, so shade is essential. Regular health checks and parasite control are important.51
Home where they are happiest
Saanens prefer temperate, cool climates and do poorly in hot, dry or tropical regions. They need shade and protection from strong sunlight. Provide a well-ventilated but draught-free shelter, and keep their living area dry to prevent foot rot and parasites. They are not suited to damp, muddy pastures.135
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A balanced diet of good-quality grass hay or forage forms the bulk of their nutrition. Supplement with goat-specific concentrates, especially for lactating does. Provide a mineral block with calcium, phosphorus and selenium. Fresh, clean water must always be available. Treats like vegetables and fruits can be given in moderation, but avoid toxic plants such as rhubarb, potatoes and azaleas.56
Company who they like around
Saanen goats are highly social herd animals and must never be kept alone. A lone goat becomes stressed, unhappy and may call out constantly or become destructive. Always keep at least two goats together, preferably three, to allow a natural herd dynamic.6
The story where it all began
The Saanen breed was developed in the Saanen Valley of Switzerland from local landrace goats. Early goats in the region were long-haired, horned and varied in colour. A dominant white gene appeared, and farmers selected for white, short-haired, docile animals that stayed close to home. By 1887 they were noted as excellent milkers. The Saanen goat breeding cooperative, founded in 1890, refined the breed for high milk yield, white coat, polledness and a calm temperament. With the spread of railways, the breed gained popularity across Europe, South Africa, America and beyond. Today it is the most widespread dairy goat breed, kept in over eighty countries, and is also popular with hobby keepers for its gentle nature and manageable size.314
