Personality what they are like

Desert hedgehogs are solitary, shy, and easily stressed by handling or sudden changes. They are nocturnal and prefer to be left alone during the day. With patient, gentle handling they can learn to trust their owner, but they may curl into a defensive ball when frightened.54

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Provide a solid-surface exercise wheel (no wire mesh) for nighttime activity. They need space to explore and burrow.4

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Bathing is rarely needed; if dirty, use lukewarm water and a gentle, unscented pet shampoo, brushing between quills with a soft toothbrush. Handle daily in the evening to build trust.4

Home where they are happiest

A warm, dry enclosure with a minimum of 2 square feet of floor space (larger is better). Temperature should be kept between 75-85°F (24-29°C) using a ceramic heat emitter or reptile heating pad. Provide soft blankets, hideouts, and deep substrate for burrowing. Avoid loud noises and fast movements.45

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Primarily insectivorous. In captivity, feed high-quality commercial hedgehog food, cooked unseasoned chicken or turkey, and live insects such as mealworms and crickets as treats. Small amounts of banana, apple, or berries can be offered. Avoid avocados, milk, dairy, raw meat, citrus fruits, onions, garlic, and celery. Always provide fresh water.42

Company who they like around

Solitary; never house two males together, and females can be territorial. They prefer to be alone and are best kept singly. This is a wild species not domesticated for life in human care; it should only be kept under special circumstances with proper permits and knowledge of desert-adapted mammal husbandry.45

The story where it all began

The desert hedgehog is a wild species native to the Sahara and Arabian deserts. It has been kept in captivity only in a limited number of research institutions and wildlife rehabilitation centres, primarily within its native range. It is not commonly seen in the exotic pet trade, partly due to its specific environmental needs and shy nature. The common pet hedgehog in North America and Europe is actually a hybrid of two other African species, not the desert hedgehog.25

Treats they will love homemade and simple

Hedgehog Fruit and Veggie Medley

Fresh fruits and vegetables provide variety and enrichment, but should only be offered in small amounts as treats.

You need

  • 1 small slice of apple (no seeds)
  • 1 small slice of pear (no seeds)
  • 1 small slice of banana
  • 1 teaspoon cooked carrot (soft, no seasoning)

  1. Wash all fruit and vegetables thoroughly.
  2. Cut the apple, pear, banana, and cooked carrot into very small, bite-sized pieces (no larger than a pea).

  4. Offer no more than 1–3 teaspoons of the mixture per day, two to three times a week.

How much: 1–3 teaspoons per day, 2–3 times per week

Gut-Loaded Insect Treats

Insects are a natural and favourite food for hedgehogs, providing protein and mental stimulation through hunting.

You need

  • 5–10 live or frozen mealworms, crickets, or waxworms (store-bought only)
  • Insect gut-loading food (available from pet stores)

How

  1. Purchase insects from a pet store or reputable supplier; never use wild-caught insects.
  2. Feed the insects a nutritious gut-loading diet for at least 24 hours before offering them to your hedgehog.
  3. Place the live or thawed insects in a shallow dish or scatter them in the enclosure for foraging.
  4. Offer 5–10 insects per day, but limit mealworms to 2–3 times per week due to their high fat content.
  5. Remove any uneaten insects after 30 minutes to prevent them from hiding in the enclosure.

How much: 5–10 insects per day; mealworms no more than 2–3 times per week

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Desert Hedgehog?

Feed your desert hedgehog once daily in the evening, as they are nocturnal. Provide fresh water every day. Follow the food label for amounts and check with your vet for your hedgehog's specific needs.4 Furry Diary plan

What should a Desert Hedgehog eat, and which foods are dangerous?

Offer high-quality commercial hedgehog food, cooked unseasoned chicken or turkey, and live insects like mealworms and crickets as treats. Small amounts of banana, apple, or berries are okay. Avoid avocados, milk, dairy, raw meat, citrus fruits, onions, garlic, celery, and any foods listed as toxic by the ASPCA, such as chocolate, grapes, and xylitol.426

Bathing is rarely needed. If your hedgehog gets dirty, use lukewarm water and a gentle, unscented pet shampoo, brushing between quills with a soft toothbrush. Handle daily in the evening to build trust.4

Does a Desert Hedgehog need brushing?

Brushing is not typically needed, but you can gently brush between quills with a soft toothbrush during a bath if they are dirty. Daily handling in the evening helps build trust.4

How do I look after a Desert Hedgehog's nails and teeth?
