Personality what they are like

Salt and pepper hedgehogs are solitary, nocturnal and naturally shy. With regular, gentle handling they can become curious and tolerate human interaction, but they rarely seek out cuddles. Each hedgehog has its own personality; some warm up quickly while others stay cautious and prefer short, predictable interactions.35

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Hedgehogs are very active and need daily exercise. Provide a solid exercise wheel (no spokes) and at least a few hours per week of supervised out-of-enclosure time for exploring or swimming. They are natural climbers and swimmers.41

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Hedgehogs are self-grooming but occasional baths with a soft toothbrush to clean the quills are helpful. Nails should be checked and trimmed regularly. Annual veterinary check-ups with a vet experienced in exotic mammals are recommended.54

Home where they are happiest

House singly in a smooth-sided enclosure (minimum 2 ft by 3 ft) with a secure lid. Provide 10 cm of soft, absorbent bedding (recycled paper or aspen shavings) for burrowing, plus a hide box, tunnels and climbing structures. Temperature must be kept at 75-85°F (24-30°C); below 65°F (18°C) can cause torpor and immune suppression. Low humidity below 40% is preferred. A solid exercise wheel is essential.14

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Primarily insectivorous. Feed a high-quality, reduced-calorie cat food or specially formulated hedgehog/insectivore diet (30-50% protein, 10-20% fat on a dry basis). Supplement with live insects such as mealworms and crickets a few times a week, plus small amounts of chopped vegetables and fruit. Avoid dairy and eggs in non-breeding pets. Fresh water must always be available.15

Company who they like around

Hedgehogs are solitary and must be housed alone. Males in particular will fight if kept together. They are only social during the breeding season in the wild. With patience, most learn to accept handling from their owner but do not require companionship from other hedgehogs.14

The story where it all began

The salt and pepper hedgehog is not a separate species or formal breed but a colour pattern of the African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris). This pattern features banded quills that create a mixed black, white and grey appearance. All pet hedgehogs in the United States are captive-bred, and the species kept worldwide is thought to be descended from hybrids of the white-bellied and Algerian hedgehogs. Over 90 colour combinations are recognised, with salt and pepper being the most common.631

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Salt and Pepper Hedgehog?

Feed your hedgehog once daily with fresh food and water. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests refreshing food and water every day. Always follow the food label for amounts and consult your vet for any adjustments.15 Furry Diary plan

What should a Salt and Pepper Hedgehog eat, and which foods are dangerous?

Offer a high-quality reduced-calorie cat food or a specially formulated hedgehog diet, plus live insects like mealworms a few times a week. Avoid dairy, eggs, and all foods listed as toxic for pets, such as chocolate, grapes, and onions. Fresh water must always be available.157

Should I bathe a Salt and Pepper Hedgehog?

Occasional baths with a soft toothbrush to clean the quills are helpful, as hedgehogs are self-grooming. Keep baths rare and gentle to avoid stress. Always dry them thoroughly afterward.54

Does a Salt and Pepper Hedgehog need brushing?

No, hedgehogs are self-grooming and do not need brushing. Their quills and fur stay clean with occasional baths and regular cage cleaning. Just provide a clean environment and they will take care of themselves.54

How do I look after a Salt and Pepper Hedgehog's nails and teeth?

Check and trim your hedgehog's nails regularly to prevent overgrowth. For teeth care, it varies; ask an exotic-pet vet for guidance since hedgehogs can have dental issues. Annual vet check-ups are recommended.54

How much space and exercise does a Salt and Pepper Hedgehog need?

Provide a smooth-sided enclosure at least 2 ft by 3 ft with a secure lid, plus a solid exercise wheel for daily running. They also need supervised out-of-enclosure time for exploring or swimming a few hours per week. Include tunnels and climbing structures for enrichment.14

Should a Salt and Pepper Hedgehog live alone or with friends?

Hedgehogs are solitary and must be housed alone. Males especially will fight if kept together. They are happy with human interaction but do not need another hedgehog companion.14

How long does a Salt and Pepper Hedgehog live?

With proper care, a salt and pepper hedgehog typically lives 5 to 8 years. Providing a warm, clean habitat and a balanced diet helps them enjoy a full lifespan.34

Is a Salt and Pepper Hedgehog a good pet for children?

These hedgehogs are shy, solitary, and nocturnal, so they may not suit very young children. With gentle, regular handling they can become curious, but they rarely seek cuddles. Older children who respect their quiet nature can enjoy them as fascinating pets.35

How do I hold a Salt and Pepper Hedgehog?

Handling techniques vary by individual hedgehog. Start by letting them sniff your hand, then gently scoop them up, supporting their whole body. For specific tips, ask a good breeder or an exotic-pet vet who knows your hedgehog's personality.
