At a glance the quick version
Looks how to spot one
short, fine hair
The American Miniature Horse has a well-proportioned, compact body that mirrors the conformation of a full-sized horse. Its coat is short and fine, and the breed comes in every colour and pattern imaginable.21
Personality what they are like
American Miniature Horses are intelligent, curious, gentle and willing to cooperate. They are eager to please and make affectionate companions for people of all ages.24
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Moderate. They need daily exercise such as turnout in a paddock, walks, or driving work. They are prone to obesity, so regular activity is important.3
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Regular grooming with a curry comb and brush, hoof care every 6-8 weeks, dental check-ups, vaccinations and parasite control. They need shelter from extreme weather and a clean, dry living area.3
Home where they are happiest
A securely fenced paddock or pasture with a shelter or stable. They need room to run and play. Although smaller than full-sized horses, they still require adequate space for exercise and grazing.35
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Primarily grass hay (about 1.5% of body weight daily, roughly 1.6 kg for a 113 kg horse). Pasture should be limited to prevent obesity. Concentrates or alfalfa only for breeding, showing or lactating mares. Fresh water always available.3
Company who they like around
They are social animals and do best with equine companionship or regular human interaction. They can be kept alone if given plenty of attention, but a companion horse or pony is ideal.2
The story where it all began
The American Miniature Horse was developed in the United States during the 20th century. Its ancestors include English and Dutch pit ponies brought to America in the late 1800s for work in coal mines, as well as Shetland ponies. Breeders selectively bred the smallest individuals to create a horse that looks like a full-sized horse in miniature. The breed gained popularity as a pet and show animal, and today it is recognised by two major registries: the American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA) and the American Miniature Horse Registry (AMHR).12
Recognised by the official bits
- American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA)
- Founded 1978; registers horses up to 34 inches (86 cm) at the last hair of the mane.4
- American Miniature Horse Registry (AMHR)
- Founded 1971 under the American Shetland Pony Club; registers horses up to 38 inches (97 cm).1
