Looks how to spot one

double coat with moderate feather on lower legs

The Breton has a compact, muscular body with a broad chest, short strong neck, and a wide croup. The head is medium-sized with a straight or slightly convex profile. The coat is thick and the legs carry moderate feather, which is less than many other heavy breeds.14

Personality what they are like

The Breton is known for being kind, gentle, calm and easygoing. It is remarkably docile yet energetic, with a practical intelligence that makes it reliable for inexperienced handlers. It enjoys human company and is easy to handle.345

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Bretons need regular exercise to stay fit and prevent obesity. They are suited to light draught work, leisure driving, and even competition driving. Without adequate work, they can become overweight, which increases the risk of laminitis and joint problems.43

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Daily grooming is recommended to bond with the horse and keep the coat healthy. The lower legs should be checked routinely for mud fever (pastern dermatitis) and feather mite infestations, especially in wet conditions. Hooves need daily cleaning and regular farriery. Routine veterinary care, vaccinations and dental checks are essential.364

Home where they are happiest

Bretons need access to shelter from extreme weather, a dry, clean environment to prevent hoof and skin problems, and secure fencing. They are hardy and adapt well to various climates, including hot weather, but require shade and fresh water in summer. Pasture should be managed to avoid overgrazing and obesity.46

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Bretons are easy keepers and typically thrive on a forage-only diet of hay and grass. Most need little to no grain unless in heavy work. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, laminitis and metabolic issues. Constant access to fresh, clean water is vital. An equine nutritionist can help balance vitamins and minerals.364

Company who they like around

Bretons are people-oriented and enjoy human interaction. They do best with regular handling and grooming. As herd animals, they benefit from the company of other horses or livestock. They are gentle enough for children to handle and are suitable for novice owners with proper guidance.34

The story where it all began

The Breton horse originates from Brittany in north-west France, with roots possibly dating back over 4,000 years to horses brought by migrating peoples. Celtic warriors improved the local stock, and later crosses with Oriental horses during the Crusades produced the Bidet Breton. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Norfolk stallions were crossed with local mares to create the Postier Breton, a lighter, agile harness horse. The breed was officially recognised in 1909. Historically used for agriculture, military work and transport, today the Breton is mainly bred for meat and leisure driving. There are two main types: the heavier Trait Breton for farm work and the lighter Postier Breton for driving.125
