Looks how to spot one
short, sleek coat typical of sport horses
The Dutch Warmblood has a clean, athletic build with a short, glossy coat that lies flat. The body is well proportioned for sport, with strong hindquarters, a long neck, and a refined head. The coat is easy to maintain with regular brushing.34
Personality what they are like
The Dutch Warmblood is known for its calm, friendly and reliable nature. It is intelligent and eager to please, making it a pleasure to train. The breed is bold but not hot-headed, and cooperative without being dull. These horses form strong bonds with their handlers and are suitable for riders of many levels.354
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Dutch Warmbloods are athletic sport horses that need daily exercise and mental stimulation. They thrive with a consistent routine that includes riding, lunging, or turnout. Without enough activity they can become bored or overweight. Competition horses require a carefully managed training schedule.35
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Grooming is straightforward: regular brushing with a curry comb, dandy brush and a soft face brush keeps the coat clean and shiny. Manes and tails should be detangled gently. Hooves need daily inspection and picking out, plus regular farrier visits for trimming and shoeing. Routine dental and veterinary care is essential.3
Home where they are happiest
Dutch Warmbloods can be kept indoors or outdoors. An indoor box stall should be at least 12 ft x 14 ft or 14 ft x 14 ft. Outdoor housing must provide a sturdy three-sided shelter. Generous daily turnout in a safe paddock or pasture is important for their physical and mental wellbeing.4
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Feed at least 1-2% of body weight in roughage (hay or pasture) daily. For a 1,250 lb horse that is about 25 lb of forage. Active horses may need concentrates such as corn or barley for extra calories. Dutch Warmbloods are easy keepers, so monitor weight carefully. Always provide fresh, clean water and salt.435
Company who they like around
Horses are herd animals and Dutch Warmbloods need regular social contact with other horses. They are friendly and enjoy human interaction. Isolation can cause stress. Turnout with compatible companions is ideal. No special legal restrictions apply to this breed in most countries.35
The story where it all began
The Dutch Warmblood was developed in the Netherlands after World War II by crossing native Dutch breeds, the Gelderlander and the Groningen, with imported Thoroughbreds, French and German warmbloods. The goal was to create a modern sport horse that could excel in dressage, jumping and driving. The breed is registered with the KWPN studbook and has become one of the most successful competition horses in the world.1236
