Looks how to spot one
Horse
The Frederiksborg is a strong, attractive horse with a well-proportioned head, often with a straight or slightly convex profile. It has a medium-length, slightly arched neck, pronounced withers, a short straight back, and a rounded, broad croup. The legs are well-muscled with strong joints and clearly defined tendons, and the feet are small and tough.4
Personality what they are like
Frederiksborgers are known for their calm, intelligent and willing nature. They are friendly and reliable, making them suitable for families and amateur riders. They are not overly sensitive, which makes them forgiving, but some individuals may need encouragement to be careful over jumps.31
Daily activity how busy a day looks
These horses are best in harness and can compete in combined driving at international levels. They also do well in dressage and show jumping. They need regular exercise and mental stimulation, and they enjoy working in a team, whether in front of a carriage or under saddle.12
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Standard horse grooming applies: regular brushing, hoof care, and dental check-ups. The breed is generally hardy and not prone to many health issues, but care should be taken to avoid excessive inbreeding. They do well on a forage-based diet with grain only for hard-working horses.3
Home where they are happiest
Frederiksborgers need ample space to move and graze. They are not demanding about feed and can thrive on pasture and hay. They are hardy and can live outdoors in temperate climates with access to shelter. They are not suited to being kept in a stall all day.3
Food basics what goes in the bowl
The diet should be at least 50% forage, such as grass and hay. Grain is usually only given to supplement hard-working horses. They are not fussy eaters and generally easy to feed.3
Company who they like around
Frederiksborgers are social animals and do best when kept with other horses. They are calm and reliable, making them good companions. They are not aggressive and generally get along well with other equines.3
The story where it all began
The Frederiksborg is Denmark's oldest horse breed, with roots going back to the royal stud at Frederiksborg Castle founded by King Frederik II in 1562. The breed was developed from the best horse material gathered from European royal studs, and it became famous across Europe as a riding and carriage horse. The studbook is the oldest for any domestic animal in the world. After the royal stud closed in 1839, breeding continued privately, and later Thoroughbred, Oldenburg, East Friesian and Arabian blood was added. The breed was used to develop other breeds like the Knabstrupper, Holsteiner and Hanoverian. Today, the Frederiksborg is endangered but has a loyal following, with about 2,000 horses worldwide and around 100 foals born each year.123
