Looks how to spot one
short, smooth coat
The Holsteiner has a short, sleek coat that lies flat against the body, typical of warmblood horses. The breed is known for its arched, rather high-set neck and powerful hindquarters, giving it a balanced and elegant appearance. The head is refined with large, intelligent eyes.2
Personality what they are like
Holsteiners are generally calm, friendly, and cooperative, making them suitable for riders of all experience levels. They are intelligent and willing to perform, though individual temperaments can vary from uncomplicated and steady to more sensitive and bold. Overall, they are known for being reliable and easy to handle.32
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Holsteiners are active, athletic horses that thrive with regular exercise. They are often used in show jumping, dressage, eventing, and combined driving. Daily turnout and structured work are important to keep them fit and content.43
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Grooming is straightforward: brush the coat several times a week with a curry comb, dandy brush, and body brush to remove dirt and loose hair. Hooves should be checked daily and trimmed by a farrier every six to eight weeks. Routine veterinary care, dental checks, and parasite prevention are essential.3
Home where they are happiest
Holsteiners need a clean, dry stall (at least 12 ft by 14 ft) or a well-maintained pasture with shelter such as a three-sided run-in shed. Access to fresh, clean water and a salt block must always be available.53
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Feed free-choice forage (hay or pasture) at about 2% of body weight daily. For an 1,100 lb horse, that is roughly 22 lb of forage. Working or competing horses may need additional energy from low-starch hay, alfalfa, oats, or concentrated pellets. Always provide a salt block and fresh water. Consult a veterinarian for individual dietary needs.35
Company who they like around
Horses are herd animals and Holsteiners benefit from companionship, either with other horses or suitable livestock. They are generally easygoing and get along well with others. Regular human interaction and positive training help maintain their friendly nature.3
The story where it all began
The Holsteiner is one of the oldest warmblood breeds, with roots tracing back to the 13th century in the Schleswig-Holstein region of northern Germany. Monks at the Uetersen monastery began breeding horses on marshland granted by Count Gerhard I in 1225. For centuries, farmers bred these horses for agricultural work, valuing their strength, hardiness, and ground-covering gaits. In the 18th century, they became prized as carriage horses. During the mid-20th century, the breed was refined for sport by introducing English Thoroughbred blood, transforming the Holsteiner into a top-level show jumping and eventing horse. Today, Holsteiners are known worldwide for their jumping ability and calm temperament.123
