Looks how to spot one
hair coat
A thick, double-layered coat that is dense and weather-resistant, with a rich mane and tail. The body is stocky and strong with a deep chest, a small head with a straight profile, and a neck set low out of the chest.12
Personality what they are like
Koniks are calm, docile and level-headed, with a peaceful and gentle nature. They are intelligent and independent but can form strong bonds with their owners. Despite their semi-feral origins, they are not aggressive or wild in temperament.234
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Moderate. They need daily turnout in a paddock or pasture with company. They are not high-energy horses but benefit from regular light riding or driving. Conservation grazing is ideal work for them.24
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Low. Their thick coat needs occasional grooming, especially during shedding season. Routine hoof care (trimming every 6-8 weeks) and dental exams are needed. They are hardy and do not require rugs or stabling in most climates.24
Home where they are happiest
Outdoor living with access to shelter from extreme weather. They thrive in group turnout on pasture or semi-natural land. Prolonged barn confinement increases respiratory risk. They are very cold-tolerant but need shade in hot weather.24
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Forage-based diet of grass hay (low sugar, low starch). They are easy keepers and prone to obesity on rich pasture. No grain or concentrates are needed. Free-choice hay and a salt lick are sufficient. Monitor body condition closely to prevent laminitis.24
Company who they like around
Highly social. They must live in a herd or with at least one companion. Solitary confinement causes stress. Semi-feral bands live in family groups. They form strong bonds with other horses and can bond with humans over time.24
The story where it all began
The Konik is a Polish breed of small horse that descends from very hardy horses from the Biłgoraj region. Some early researchers thought it was a direct descendant of the extinct wild tarpan, but modern genetic studies show it shares DNA with other domestic horse breeds and is not closely related to the tarpan. The breed was developed from local farm horses that may have had some wild horse ancestry from a zoo in Zamość in 1806. The first studbook was started in 1955, and the breed has been closed since 1984. Today it is considered endangered, with about 2,500 mares and 200 stallions in Poland. Koniks are now famous for conservation grazing, where they live semi-ferally on nature reserves and help manage coarse vegetation.156
