Personality what they are like
Missouri Fox Trotters are known for their gentle, friendly, and calm nature. They are intelligent, good-natured, and have strong nerves, making them suitable for riders of all ages and experience levels, including children and beginners.236
Daily activity how busy a day looks
These horses need regular exercise and mental stimulation. They excel in trail riding, pleasure riding, endurance riding, versatility events, and even cattle work. Daily turnout and consistent work help keep them happy and healthy.24
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Routine care includes daily grooming to keep the coat clean and healthy, regular farrier visits for hoof trimming and shoeing (especially important for gaited horses), dental checks, vaccinations, parasite control, and lameness exams. They are generally easy keepers but can become obese if overfed.3
Home where they are happiest
Missouri Fox Trotters require safe, sturdy fencing, shelter from extreme weather, and access to clean water at all times. They need adequate turnout space for exercise and social interaction. As a hardy breed, they adapt well to various climates but benefit from good pasture management.3
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A balanced diet of quality forage (hay or pasture) forms the foundation. They are easy keepers, so sugar and starch intake should be limited to prevent obesity. Feed should be adjusted according to workload, age, and body condition. Always provide fresh water and a salt or mineral block.3
Company who they like around
Missouri Fox Trotters are social animals that thrive on human companionship and interaction with other horses. They are described as 'every person's pleasure horse' and enjoy being around people, making them excellent family horses. They are not known to be aggressive or difficult.23
The story where it all began
The Missouri Fox Trotter was developed in the early 1800s by settlers in the rugged Ozark Mountains of Missouri. They needed a sure-footed, durable, and comfortable horse that could plow fields, haul logs, work cattle, and travel long distances over rocky terrain. Foundation bloodlines came from Arabian, Morgan, American Saddlebred, Tennessee Walking Horse, and Standardbred stock. By the mid-19th century, the breed was prized by country doctors, sheriffs, and stockmen for its smooth fox-trot gait and calm temperament. The Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breed Association was formed in 1948, and in 2002 the breed became the official state horse of Missouri.217
