At a glance the quick version
Looks how to spot one
dun with primitive markings
The Fjord horse has a compact, muscular body with a thick, arched neck, a broad forehead, large expressive eyes and small alert ears. Its coat is always a shade of dun, and the mane is traditionally roached (cut short) to stand upright along the neck, showing off a dark dorsal stripe and often zebra stripes on the legs.31
Personality what they are like
The Norwegian Fjord Horse is famously placid, cooperative and willing to please. It rarely spooks, is naturally inquisitive and reads people well, adjusting its energy to match theirs. This makes it an ideal family horse that is safe for children yet sturdy enough for adult riders.34
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Fjords need regular exercise and mental stimulation. They excel in riding (English and Western), driving, dressage, jumping, hacking over rough terrain and even equine therapy. They are steady rather than speedy and enjoy working with people.36
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Routine grooming with a curry comb and brush keeps the coat healthy. The thick winter coat sheds out in spring and may need extra brushing. Hooves should be trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks by a farrier. Dental check-ups and vaccinations follow standard horse care.5
Home where they are happiest
Fjord horses are hardy and prefer living outdoors with access to a simple shelter, as they are adapted to cold, windy climates. They need a dry, clean area with good fencing. Overfeeding and lush pasture must be avoided to prevent laminitis and colic.35
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Fjords are easy keepers that thrive on grass hay (not alfalfa) and short, unfertilised pasture. They rarely need grain unless in very demanding work. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, colic and laminitis, so careful rationing is essential.53
Company who they like around
Fjord horses are people-oriented and enjoy human company. They are also social with other horses and do best with companionship, whether from other horses or regular interaction with their owners. They are not known to be aggressive or difficult to handle.34
The story where it all began
The Norwegian Fjord Horse is one of the oldest and purest horse breeds in the world, with ancestors that migrated to Norway over 4,000 years ago. Archaeological finds from Viking burial sites show selective breeding for at least 2,000 years. Vikings used them as war mounts and later they became essential farm horses in western Norway. In 1907, a pure Fjord stallion named Njål was used to restart the breed after failed crosses with the Dole horse, and all modern pure Fjords trace back to him. The breed has remained remarkably pure, with no significant crossbreeding since.483
