At a glance the quick version
Looks how to spot one
solid body colour, medium bone, broad chest, sloping shoulders, gracefully arched neck
A medium-sized horse with a deep, wide chest and sloping shoulders that allow a smooth, natural gait. The head is of medium size with bold eyes and well-shaped ears, and the neck is set on at an angle for a graceful arch. Legs are clean and free from deformity, with feet proportionate to the body.5
Personality what they are like
Rocky Mountain Horses are known for their calm, willing and gentle nature. They are forgiving and quiet, making them ideal for novice riders, children and families. Their even temperament and desire to please have been prized since their early days as all-purpose farm and trail horses.346
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Moderate to high. They thrive with regular riding and enjoy long trail rides, endurance work, and showing. Their smooth gait makes them comfortable for hours in the saddle. They are also used in competitive disciplines such as dressage, jumping, team penning and mounted shooting. Daily turnout or exercise is important.43
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Standard horse care: regular brushing, hoof care, dental checks and vaccinations. As easy keepers, they do not need high-energy feeds; care must be taken not to overfeed. They tolerate cold winters well with minimal shelter, but should have access to a dry, draught-free shelter or stable.36
Home where they are happiest
They are hardy and adapt well to various climates, but need adequate grazing or good-quality hay, fresh water, and shelter from extreme weather. A dry, well-ventilated stable or field shelter is recommended. They are sure-footed on rough ground, so hilly or rocky terrain is fine.36
Food basics what goes in the bowl
As easy keepers, they require a diet based on good-quality pasture or hay, with a mineral supplement if needed. Avoid overfeeding with rich grains or concentrates; they maintain condition easily. In winter, provide extra hay and ensure access to clean water.63
Company who they like around
Horses are herd animals and need companionship of other horses or compatible livestock. They are gentle and sociable, and do well in group turnout. They are not known to be aggressive. No special legal restrictions apply to this breed in most countries.34
The story where it all began
The Rocky Mountain Horse breed began in the late 1800s in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. A gaited stallion, brought from the Rocky Mountain region and known simply as 'the Rocky Mountain Horse', was bred to local Appalachian saddle mares. This chocolate-coloured horse with a flaxen mane and tail passed on his smooth gait and gentle nature. The breed remained largely unknown outside the region for decades, used by local families as a versatile all-purpose horse for ploughing, herding, riding and driving. In the mid-20th century, a stallion named Old Tobe, owned by Sam Tuttle, became the foundation sire of the modern breed. Old Tobe lived to 37 and sired many offspring that inherited his perfect gait, calm temperament and longevity. The Rocky Mountain Horse Association was formed in 1986 to preserve and promote the breed. Today, around 26,000 registered horses exist, mostly in the United States, and they are valued as trail, show and family horses.123
