Looks how to spot one
feathered legs, heavy draught conformation
The Shire is a massive, muscular draught horse with a broad chest, strong back, and powerful hindquarters. Its most distinctive feature is the abundant feathering, long, silky hair, on the lower legs. The head is long and lean with a slightly Roman nose, large docile eyes, and long, sensitive ears.15
Personality what they are like
Shire horses are famously calm, obedient and eager to please. They are known as 'gentle giants' because despite their enormous size they are patient, friendly and rarely spooked by noise, children or other animals. They learn quickly and are a good choice for riders of all levels who are comfortable handling a large horse.34
Daily activity how busy a day looks
At least 30 minutes of energetic exercise daily. Because of their slow metabolism, they can become overweight easily, so regular work or turnout is important. Avoid excess strain on joints.34
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Daily grooming is needed, with special attention to the feathering on the legs. The feathering must be brushed regularly, kept clean and completely dry after washing to prevent bacterial and fungal infections. Hooves should be checked daily and trimmed or shod by a professional farrier. Regular vet care, vaccinations and tooth care are essential.34
Home where they are happiest
Because of their size, Shires need larger stalls and more space than other horses. A pasture of at least one acre is recommended for grazing and exercise. Clean bedding and a dry, well-ventilated shelter are essential. They need plenty of fresh water, up to 24 gallons daily.3
Food basics what goes in the bowl
High-quality grass hay or a mix of grass and legumes, plus pasture grasses in the growing season. Feed about 1.5-3% of body weight daily (for a 2,200 lb horse that is about 44 lb of forage). Grains and concentrates should be limited to avoid obesity. Provide a salt lick and consider a vitamin and mineral supplement.34
Company who they like around
Shire horses are social animals and do best in the company of other equines such as horses, ponies, mules or donkeys. They are not known to be aggressive and generally get along well with people, including children, and other animals.3
The story where it all began
The Shire horse descends from the English 'Great Horse' of medieval times, which carried knights in full armour weighing up to 400 lb. The breed was refined in the 18th century by crossing English mares with stallions imported from Holland and Flanders. It became the backbone of British agriculture and transport, pulling ploughs, wagons and barges. Numbers fell dramatically after mechanisation, dropping from over a million to just a few thousand by the 1960s, but dedicated breeders revived the Shire and it remains a beloved draught and show horse today.1267
