The story where it all began
The Tori horse was developed at the Tori stud in Estonia from 1890 to 1950 by crossing native Estonian mares with European halfbred stallions. The stud book began in 1922, and the breed was officially recognised by the Estonian Republic in 1925. Initially a harness and farm horse, the breed later faced crossbreeding with Hanoverian, Trakehner and Thoroughbred horses to create a lighter riding type. By 1999, fewer than 100 purebred Tori horses remained, and today the breed is considered rare, with only about 200 original individuals left.137
