Looks how to spot one

Exoskeleton

The body is divided into head, thorax and abdomen, with a narrow waist. Workers and queens are glossy dark brown to black, sometimes with greyish tones; males are slimmer and more wasp-like. Queens are noticeably larger than workers.32

Personality what they are like

Black garden ants are active and aggressive when hunting, but their mandibles are too weak to hurt human skin, so they are safe to keep. They defend their territory vigorously and use pheromone trails to recruit nestmates to food sources.21

Daily activity how busy a day looks

They are diurnal and most active during warm daylight hours. Provide a foraging area outside the nest so they can explore and exercise. Minimal disturbance is best, especially when the colony is small.15

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Weekly maintenance takes just a few minutes. Remove waste and uneaten food every few days to prevent mould. The ants will create a waste pile, making cleaning easy. Keep the nest substrate moist but not waterlogged.51

Home where they are happiest

Small colonies do well in a test tube with a foraging area; larger colonies can be housed in Ytong (aerated concrete) nests, plaster nests, or a dirt setup. Room temperature (18-24°C) is ideal, with a heat lamp or mat occasionally to warm one area to about 25°C. Humidity should be 10-50%, spray lightly to keep the nest moist. They require a winter hibernation period at 5-10°C for several months, during which feeding is stopped. In the wild they nest underground, often under stones or in dead wood.21

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Offer sugar water (25% concentration) or diluted honey 2-3 times per week as carbohydrate. For protein, provide small dead insects such as fruit flies, mealworms or crickets, or tiny pieces of unseasoned meat or egg. Remove uneaten food after 24 hours. During hibernation, feeding is not needed.21

Company who they like around

This species is monogynous, each colony has a single queen. Colonies can grow from a few hundred to 10,000 workers. They are territorial and aggressive towards other ant colonies, so only one colony should be kept per setup. They are not venomous and do not sting; their bites are harmless to humans.316

The story where it all began

The black garden ant is one of the most common ants in Europe and has been kept by ant hobbyists for decades, especially in the UK and Europe. Its hardiness, simple care requirements and fascinating social behaviour make it the classic beginner species. Queens can live for nearly 30 years, allowing a colony to be a long-term project.351

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Black Garden Ant Colony?

Offer sugar water or diluted honey 2-3 times per week as carbohydrate, and provide small dead insects or tiny pieces of unseasoned meat or egg for protein. Remove uneaten food after 24 hours, and during winter hibernation feeding is not needed. Furry Diary's starting plan is to follow this schedule and adjust based on your colony's activity.21 Furry Diary plan

What does a Black Garden Ant Colony eat, and what should it never eat?

They eat sugar water (25% concentration) or diluted honey for carbs, and small dead insects like fruit flies, mealworms, or crickets, or tiny bits of unseasoned meat or egg for protein. Never give them seasoned, fatty, or processed human foods, and avoid anything with artificial sweeteners or pesticides.21

How much space does a Black Garden Ant Colony need?

Small colonies do well in a test tube with a foraging area, while larger colonies can be housed in Ytong, plaster, or dirt setups. The space should allow for exploration and exercise, and only one colony should be kept per setup as they are territorial.213

What temperature, light or water does a Black Garden Ant Colony need?

Room temperature of 18-24°C is ideal, with a heat lamp or mat occasionally warming one area to about 25°C. Humidity should be 10-50%, so spray lightly to keep the nest moist. They need a winter hibernation period at 5-10°C for several months, during which feeding stops.21

How often should I clean a Black Garden Ant Colony's home?

Weekly maintenance takes just a few minutes: remove waste and uneaten food every few days to prevent mould. The ants create a waste pile, making cleaning easy, and keep the nest substrate moist but not waterlogged.51

Can a Black Garden Ant Colony live with others?

No, this species is territorial and aggressive towards other ant colonies, so only one colony should be kept per setup. They are not venomous and do not sting, and their bites are harmless to humans.316

How long does a Black Garden Ant Colony live?

The queen can live for many years, while workers typically live for several months. The colony as a whole can persist for years with proper care, including a winter hibernation period.21

Can I handle a Black Garden Ant Colony?

Handling is not recommended as they are active and territorial, and minimal disturbance is best, especially when the colony is small. Their mandibles are too weak to hurt human skin, but they defend their territory vigorously.215
