Looks how to spot one

Exoskeleton

A glossy, hard outer shell that covers the whole body, giving the scorpion a shiny, metallic appearance.1

ColoursMetallic blue-blackDark black with a blue sheenSometimes a red hue on the pincers13

Personality what they are like

Generally calm and docile, but can become defensive if provoked. It is more likely to use its pincers than its sting. Handling is not recommended as it causes stress to the animal.135

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Low activity needs. It is nocturnal and spends most of the day hidden in a burrow or under cover. It does not require exercise but benefits from an enclosure that allows natural behaviours like burrowing and exploring.13

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Very low maintenance. The enclosure needs regular misting to maintain humidity, and the water dish should be cleaned and refilled regularly. No grooming is required. During moulting, the scorpion should not be disturbed.13

Home where they are happiest

A secure terrarium with good ventilation, at least 45x30x30 cm for one adult. Use a deep layer (10-15 cm) of coconut fibre or peat moss for burrowing. Provide hides like cork bark and a shallow water dish. Daytime temperature 25-28°C, night-time 21-24°C. Humidity 70-80%. This species is not venomous enough to be dangerous to humans, but its sting can be painful, similar to a bee sting.123

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Insectivorous. Feed live insects such as crickets, roaches, mealworms and locusts. Prey should be no larger than the width of the scorpion's body. Juveniles fed every 3-4 days, adults once a week. A shallow water dish must always be available.12

Company who they like around

Solitary. It is best kept alone as it can be aggressive towards other scorpions, especially during feeding. It does not need companionship and will be stressed by the presence of other scorpions.5

The story where it all began

The Blue Forest Scorpion has been kept in captivity for many years and is a popular choice among exotic pet enthusiasts. It is often confused with the Emperor Scorpion and has sometimes been sold under that name in pet shops. Its striking blue colour and hardy nature have made it a staple in the hobby. It is considered easy to care for and suitable for beginners.125

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Blue Scorpion?

Juveniles should be fed every 3-4 days, while adults only need feeding once a week. Always offer live prey no larger than the width of the scorpion's body. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests feeding according to the species, size and moult stage.12 Furry Diary plan

What does a Blue Scorpion eat, and what should it never eat?

It eats live insects like crickets, roaches, mealworms and locusts. Never feed prey larger than the width of its body, and avoid dead or pre-killed insects as it prefers to hunt. Always provide a shallow water dish.12

How much space does a Blue Scorpion need?

A secure terrarium at least 45x30x30 cm is needed for one adult, with a deep layer of coconut fibre or peat moss for burrowing. Provide hides like cork bark and a shallow water dish.123

What temperature, light or water does a Blue Scorpion need?

Daytime temperature should be 25-28°C, dropping to 21-24°C at night, with humidity kept at 70-80%. No special lighting is needed, but a shallow water dish must always be available and the enclosure should be misted regularly.123

How often should I clean a Blue Scorpion's home?

Spot clean weekly by removing leftover food, and change the substrate every 180 days. Furry Diary's plan also includes checking humidity and cleaning the water dish every two days. Furry Diary plan

Can a Blue Scorpion live with others?

No, it is solitary and best kept alone as it can be aggressive towards other scorpions, especially during feeding. It does not need companionship and will be stressed by others.5

How long does a Blue Scorpion live?

With proper care, a Blue Scorpion can live between 7 and 10 years.124

Can I handle a Blue Scorpion?

Handling is not recommended as it causes stress to the animal. While generally calm, it can become defensive and its sting, though not dangerous, is painful like a bee sting.135
