Personality what they are like

Carolina wolf spiders are shy and nervous, preferring to flee rather than fight. They are very fast and may bite defensively if handled or restrained, but their venom is not considered dangerous to humans. They are best kept as display animals and should not be handled.54

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Low. They are ambush hunters that spend much of their time in or near their burrow. They do not need exercise or enrichment beyond a suitable enclosure with deep substrate for burrowing.45

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Minimal. Clean the enclosure as needed to remove waste and uneaten prey. Provide a shallow water dish and mist occasionally. Do not handle; use a catch cup if moving the spider.45

Home where they are happiest

A low, spacious tank (2.5-10 gallons) with a secure lid. Provide 3-6 inches of compactable substrate (peat moss, soil, or coco coir) for burrowing. Keep temperature at 68-85°F (20-29°C) and humidity at 75-80%. Good ventilation is important. No special lighting needed.54

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Live prey only. Feed adult spiders 1-2 times per week on crickets, roaches, grasshoppers, moths, or other appropriately sized insects. Juveniles should be fed every 3-5 days. Remove uneaten prey after 24 hours.41

Company who they like around

Solitary. Carolina wolf spiders are cannibalistic and must be housed individually. They do not require or benefit from companionship.4

The story where it all began

The Carolina wolf spider was first described in 1805 by Charles Athanase Walckenaer under the name Lycosa tarentula carolinensis. Later taxonomic revisions in the 20th century moved it to the genus Hogna. It has long been known as the largest wolf spider in North America and is occasionally kept as a pet by invertebrate enthusiasts, though it is not as common in the pet trade as some tarantulas.16

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Carolina Wolf Spider?

Adult Carolina wolf spiders should be fed 1-2 times per week on live insects like crickets. Juveniles need feeding every 3-5 days. Always remove any uneaten prey after 24 hours. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests adjusting based on the spider's size and moult stage.41 Furry Diary plan

What does a Carolina Wolf Spider eat, and what should it never eat?

They eat live prey such as crickets, roaches, grasshoppers, and moths. Never offer dead or pre-killed prey, as they only respond to movement. Also avoid prey that is too large, which could injure the spider.41

How much space does a Carolina Wolf Spider need?

A low, spacious tank of 2.5 to 10 gallons works well, with a secure lid to prevent escapes. Provide 3-6 inches of compactable substrate like peat moss or soil for burrowing. This gives them room to create their natural hide.54

What temperature, light or water does a Carolina Wolf Spider need?

Keep the enclosure at 68-85°F with humidity between 75-80%. No special lighting is needed. Provide a shallow water dish and mist occasionally. Furry Diary's plan includes checking humidity and refreshing water every two days.54 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Carolina Wolf Spider's home?

Spot clean weekly by removing leftover food and waste. Change the entire substrate every 6 months to keep the environment fresh. These shy spiders appreciate a clean, low-stress home.45 Furry Diary plan

Can a Carolina Wolf Spider live with others?

No, they are solitary and cannibalistic, so each spider must be housed alone. They do not need or benefit from companionship.4

How long does a Carolina Wolf Spider live?

They typically live 1 to 3 years. Providing proper care and a stable environment can help them reach the upper end of that range.24

Can I handle a Carolina Wolf Spider?

It's best not to handle them. They are shy, fast, and may bite defensively if restrained. Their venom is not dangerous to humans, but handling causes stress. Enjoy them as fascinating display animals instead.54
