Looks how to spot one

urticating hairs and spiky hind legs

A heavy-bodied, robust tarantula with a velvety black carapace and abdomen, contrasted by bright orange to brick-red legs. The hind legs are noticeably thicker and covered in sharp spikes, used in a unique defensive display.12

Coloursblackorangebrick-redrust-orange15

Personality what they are like

Shy and skittish, but more defensive than many New World tarantulas. When threatened, it may raise its abdomen and strike backward with its spiky hind legs, or spin in a circle to confuse an attacker. It is not suitable for handling and is best for experienced keepers.12

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Nocturnal and largely inactive; spends most of the time hidden in a burrow or retreat. The enclosure should provide deep substrate for burrowing and a secure hide.14

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Minimal. The keeper must maintain a stable moisture gradient and clean the enclosure. Use long sleeves, gloves, and eye protection when working with the substrate due to urticating hairs. Never handle this spider.45

Home where they are happiest

A terrestrial enclosure (e.g. 40x30x30 cm for an adult) with deep, slightly damp substrate (coconut coir or peat/vermiculite mix) for burrowing, a hide, and a shallow water dish. Excellent cross-ventilation is essential. Temperature must be kept cool, between 20-24°C (68-75°F), as high temperatures are fatal. Humidity should be high, 75-85%. Fall height must be kept low to prevent injury.254

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Insectivorous. Feeds on crickets, roaches, locusts, and occasional worms. Adults may also take small lizards and mice. Feed conservatively to avoid overfeeding.14

Company who they like around

Solitary. This species is defensive and should not be handled. It is not illegal to keep in most countries, but local regulations may apply. It is not listed by CITES or the EU.34

The story where it all began

First described by Anton Ausserer in 1875, this tarantula has been known to science for over a century. It became a sought-after species in the pet trade due to its striking orange legs and unusual defensive behaviour, though its need for cooler temperatures makes it a challenge best suited to experienced keepers.12

Recognised by the official bits

World Spider Catalog
Accepts Megaphobema robustum as a valid species.4

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Colombian Giant Redleg Tarantula?

Feeding frequency depends on your tarantula's size and moult stage. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests adjusting based on these factors. For exact amounts, check the food label and ask your vet or a good breeder.14 Furry Diary plan

What does a Colombian Giant Redleg Tarantula eat, and what should it never eat?

Your Colombian Giant Redleg Tarantula enjoys crickets, roaches, locusts, and occasional worms; adults may also take small lizards and mice. Never feed it anything outside this list without checking with an exotic-pet vet.14

How much space does a Colombian Giant Redleg Tarantula need?

An adult needs a terrestrial enclosure around 40x30x30 cm (about 16x12x12 inches). Provide deep substrate for burrowing and a hide. This gives them enough space to feel secure.254

What temperature, light or water does a Colombian Giant Redleg Tarantula need?

Keep the temperature cool between 20-24°C (68-75°F) and humidity high at 75-85%. Provide a shallow water dish and excellent cross-ventilation. No special lighting is needed as they are nocturnal.254

How often should I clean a Colombian Giant Redleg Tarantula's home?

Spot clean the enclosure weekly by removing leftover food. Replace the substrate every 180 days (about 6 months). Always wear long sleeves, gloves, and eye protection due to urticating hairs.45 Furry Diary plan

Can a Colombian Giant Redleg Tarantula live with others?

No, this tarantula is solitary and defensive. It must be housed alone to avoid stress or injury.34

How long does a Colombian Giant Redleg Tarantula live?

This tarantula can live between 8 and 25 years, with females typically living longer. Provide consistent care to help them reach their full lifespan.3

Can I handle a Colombian Giant Redleg Tarantula?

No, handling is not recommended. This tarantula is defensive and may use its urticating hairs or spiky hind legs. It is best admired from a distance.1245
