Looks how to spot one

Exoskeleton with urticating hairs

Personality what they are like

This tarantula is generally shy as a juvenile but becomes more confident with age. It prefers to flee rather than fight, and may throw defensive threat poses if cornered. It is not aggressive but can be fast and skittish, and it has urticating hairs that it can flick. Handling is not recommended.2345

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Low activity needs; it is a terrestrial opportunistic burrower that spends time both on the surface and in its burrow. It does not require exercise but benefits from an enclosure with ample floor space and deep substrate for burrowing.234

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Minimal grooming; the spider cleans itself. The keeper must maintain a humid environment with deep substrate and good ventilation. Urticating hairs can irritate skin and eyes, so use gloves and avoid handling. Spot-clean waste and remove uneaten prey.234

Home where they are happiest

A terrestrial enclosure wider than tall, with at least 15 cm (6 inches) of moist substrate for burrowing, a hide, a water dish, and good ventilation. Temperature 24-27°C (75-80°F), humidity 70-80%. Not a handling animal; use a catch container for rehousing. This species is not venomous to humans in a dangerous way, but it has urticating hairs that can cause irritation.2346

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Insectivorous; adults eat 6 adult crickets per week or equivalent dubia roaches. Spiderlings take pinhead crickets. They have a strong feeding response and rarely refuse food except before a moult.45

Company who they like around

Solitary; must be housed alone as they are cannibalistic. No social interaction needed. Not a pet for handling.23

The story where it all began

Xenesthis immanis was first described by Ausserer in 1875. It is a New World tarantula native to the humid forests of Colombia, Venezuela, and Peru. In the wild, it has a mutualistic relationship with the microhylid frog Chiasmocleis ventrimaculata, where the spider protects the frog's eggs. It became popular in the pet trade due to its large size, striking purple and magenta colours, and bold feeding behaviour. It is considered an intermediate to advanced species suitable for experienced keepers.1634

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Colombian Lesserblack Tarantula?

Adult tarantulas typically eat about 6 adult crickets per week, but feeding frequency depends on size and moult stage. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests feeding according to the species, size, and moult stage, so adjust as needed. Always follow the food label and consult your vet for exact amounts.45 Furry Diary plan

What does a Colombian Lesserblack Tarantula eat, and what should it never eat?

This tarantula eats insects like crickets and dubia roaches; spiderlings take pinhead crickets. It should never eat wild-caught prey or anything that could be toxic, but specific forbidden foods vary. Ask your exotic-pet vet for a safe, balanced diet list.45

How much space does a Colombian Lesserblack Tarantula need?

It needs a terrestrial enclosure that is wider than tall, with at least 15 cm (6 inches) of deep substrate for burrowing. The exact size depends on the spider's size and activity, so ask a good breeder or vet for specific dimensions.234

What temperature, light or water does a Colombian Lesserblack Tarantula need?

Keep the temperature between 24-27°C (75-80°F) and humidity at 70-80%. Provide a shallow water dish and good ventilation; no special lighting is needed. Furry Diary's plan suggests checking humidity and water every two days.2346 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Colombian Lesserblack Tarantula's home?

Spot-clean waste and remove uneaten prey weekly, as suggested by Furry Diary's plan. A full substrate change is recommended every 6 months. Always use gloves to avoid irritation from urticating hairs.234 Furry Diary plan

Can a Colombian Lesserblack Tarantula live with others?

No, this tarantula is solitary and must be housed alone because it is cannibalistic. It does not need any social interaction and should never be kept with other tarantulas.23

How long does a Colombian Lesserblack Tarantula live?

This tarantula has a long lifespan of 15 to 20 years, so be ready for a long-term commitment. With proper care, it can be a wonderful companion for many years.234

Can I handle a Colombian Lesserblack Tarantula?

Handling is not recommended because this tarantula is fast, skittish, and can flick urticating hairs that irritate skin and eyes. It prefers to flee and may throw defensive poses if cornered. Use a catch container for rehousing instead.2345
