Personality what they are like

This spider is quick to flee when disturbed, but it will not hesitate to bite if cornered or feels trapped. It is defensive and very fast, so it is not suitable for handling. Its venom is medically significant and can cause intense pain, muscle cramping, nausea and sweating.264

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Nocturnal and arboreal, needs a tall enclosure with plenty of vertical climbing surfaces. It is active and fast, so a secure lid is essential. It does not need exercise but benefits from space to climb and web.25

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Minimal grooming needed. Keep the enclosure clean, provide a water dish, and mist occasionally to maintain humidity. Avoid handling to reduce stress and risk of bites. Use safe tools for maintenance.25

This is a solitary species and must be housed alone. It is not social and does not need companionship. It is venomous and not suitable for handling, so keep it safely behind glass.2

The story where it all began

The Indian Ornamental Tarantula was first described by Pocock in 1899. It is native to the forests of India, where it lives in tree hollows. It has been a popular pet among tarantula enthusiasts for many years due to its striking appearance, despite its speed and potent venom. It is one of the most commonly kept species in the Poecilotheria genus.127
