At a glance the quick version
Diagonal leg span
Looks how to spot one
hairless exoskeleton
This tarantula has a dark brown to blackish carapace with pale edges that form a starburst pattern. The chelicerae are creamy, and the legs show pale bands and spots. The underside is pale brown, and the abdomen is large and dark with a pattern of three linked spots.1
Personality what they are like
Shy and easily spooked, this spider is extremely fast and will flee if disturbed. It rarely threat-poses but may bite defensively, often hanging on and injecting venom. Juveniles are more nervous than adults. Not suitable for handling.156
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Nocturnal and arboreal, it needs plenty of vertical climbing surfaces and dark hiding spots. It does not require exercise but benefits from a complex enclosure with branches and cork bark.14
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Very low maintenance. No grooming needed. Keep the enclosure clean and provide fresh water. Avoid handling due to speed and venom.6
Home where they are happiest
An arboreal setup with good ventilation, a large water dish, and plenty of climbing surfaces. Temperature 17-21°C (70-75°F), humidity 65-75%. Provide a dark retreat and a vertical cork bark slab. This species is listed under CITES Appendix II and EU Annex B, so local laws may restrict keeping it without a permit.463
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Feed crickets, roaches, locusts, mealworms and superworms. Spiderlings eat small cricket legs or flightless fruit flies. Adults eat 2-5 insects weekly. Avoid overfeeding; monitor abdomen size.564
Company who they like around
Primarily solitary. Communal keeping has been attempted but requires expert care, ample space and food to prevent cannibalism. Not a social species.6
The story where it all began
First described by Pocock in 1895, this tarantula is endemic to Sri Lanka's lowland and montane forests. In the pet trade it is sometimes split into highland and lowland forms, though officially they are the same species. It is less common in captivity than other Poecilotheria, making it more expensive and sought after by advanced keepers.14

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Ivory Ornamental Tarantula?
Feed your Ivory Ornamental Tarantula 2 to 5 insects weekly, adjusting based on its size and moult stage. Spiderlings need smaller prey more often. Always monitor abdomen size to avoid overfeeding. For exact amounts, check the food label and ask your vet.564 Furry Diary plan
What does an Ivory Ornamental Tarantula eat, and what should it never eat?
This tarantula eats crickets, roaches, locusts, mealworms, and superworms. Spiderlings can have small cricket legs or flightless fruit flies. Never feed wild-caught insects or prey that is too large. For a complete list of safe foods, consult an exotic-pet vet.564
How much space does an Ivory Ornamental Tarantula need?
Your Ivory Ornamental Tarantula needs a tall enclosure with plenty of vertical climbing surfaces and dark hiding spots. The exact size depends on the spider's leg span; a good starting point is at least three times its leg span in height. Ask a good breeder for specific dimensions.14
What temperature, light or water does an Ivory Ornamental Tarantula need?
Keep the temperature between 17-21°C (70-75°F) and humidity at 65-75%. Provide a large water dish for drinking and maintain good ventilation. No special lighting is needed as it is nocturnal.463
How often should I clean an Ivory Ornamental Tarantula's home?
Spot clean the enclosure weekly by removing leftover food. Change the substrate every six months. Check and refill the water dish every two days. Leave your tarantula completely alone while it is moulting. Furry Diary plan
Can an Ivory Ornamental Tarantula live with others?
No, this tarantula is solitary and should be housed alone. Communal keeping is attempted only by experts with ample space and food to prevent cannibalism. It is not a social species.6
How long does an Ivory Ornamental Tarantula live?
Your Ivory Ornamental Tarantula can live 8 to 25 years, with females often living longer than males. Provide consistent care to help it reach its full lifespan.3
Can I handle an Ivory Ornamental Tarantula?
Handling is not recommended for this tarantula. It is shy, extremely fast, and may bite defensively, injecting venom. Enjoy watching it from a safe distance instead.156
