Personality what they are like

This scorpion is generally not very aggressive and prefers to use its claws for defence rather than its stinger. However, wild-caught adults can be very defensive and quick to sting. Captive-bred young are often docile. They are nocturnal and may hide during the day. Handling is not recommended because they are venomous and can be skittish.32

Daily activity how busy a day looks

These scorpions are nocturnal and become active at dusk. They need a terrarium with a deep substrate of at least 10-20 cm so they can burrow. Provide hiding places under bark, roots, or leaves. A water dish should always be available. They do not need special lighting, but a day/night cycle is beneficial.27

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Keep the enclosure clean by spot cleaning daily and doing a full clean every 4 weeks. Maintain high humidity (80-95%) by misting daily and using a moisture-retaining substrate like peat or soil mixed with sand. Provide a shallow water dish. Avoid handling; use tools or a small container for moving the scorpion.72

Home where they are happiest

A glass terrarium of at least 30x30x30 cm is suitable for one adult. Use a deep substrate of peat, soil, or coconut fibre mixed with sand, at least 10-20 cm deep for burrowing. Maintain a temperature of 24-30°C and humidity of 80-95%. Provide hiding spots and a water dish. Do not use under-tank heating as the scorpion may burrow to escape heat.72

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Carnivorous. Feed on live insects such as crickets, locusts, cockroaches, and mealworms. Prey should be smaller than the scorpion. Offer food once every 1-2 weeks for adults, more often for young. Remove uneaten prey after 24 hours.52

Company who they like around

This species can be kept communally, but there is always a risk of cannibalism, especially when hungry or during moulting. It is safer to keep them singly, or in groups only if the enclosure is large and food is plentiful. Gravid females may be more aggressive. Always provide plenty of hiding places.82

The story where it all began

The Laos Forest Scorpion is a species of scorpion native to the tropical forests of Vietnam and Laos. It has been kept in the pet trade for many years and is appreciated for its large size and relatively calm nature. It is often recommended as a good beginner species for those interested in keeping scorpions, though its venomous sting means it should be treated with respect.16

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Laos Forest Scorpion?

Your Laos Forest Scorpion is a carnivore that enjoys live insects. Feed adults once every 1-2 weeks, and offer food more often to growing youngsters. Always remove any uneaten prey after 24 hours to keep the enclosure clean. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests feeding depends on the scorpion's size and moult stage, so adjust as needed.52 Furry Diary plan

What does a Laos Forest Scorpion eat, and what should it never eat?

This scorpion eats live insects like crickets, locusts, cockroaches, and mealworms, all smaller than itself. It should never be fed prey that is too large or dead, as this can cause stress or health issues. For specific dietary restrictions, consult an exotic-pet vet or a good breeder.52

How much space does a Laos Forest Scorpion need?

A single adult needs a glass terrarium at least 30x30x30 cm, with a deep substrate of 10-20 cm for burrowing. Provide plenty of hiding spots under bark or leaves so your scorpion feels secure. This space allows it to exhibit natural behaviours and stay comfortable.72

What temperature, light or water does a Laos Forest Scorpion need?

Keep the enclosure at 24-30°C with high humidity of 80-95%, achieved by misting daily and using a moisture-retaining substrate. No special lighting is needed, but a day/night cycle is beneficial. Always provide a shallow water dish, and avoid under-tank heating as your scorpion may burrow to escape heat. Furry Diary's plan suggests checking humidity and water every 2 days.72 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Laos Forest Scorpion's home?

Spot clean daily to remove leftover food and waste, and do a full clean every 4 weeks. Furry Diary's plan recommends a weekly spot clean and changing the substrate every 6 months. Regular cleaning keeps your scorpion healthy and its environment pleasant.72 Furry Diary plan

Can a Laos Forest Scorpion live with others?

This species can be kept communally, but there is always a risk of cannibalism, especially when hungry or during moulting. It is safer to keep them singly, or in groups only if the enclosure is large and food is plentiful. Gravid females may be more aggressive, so always provide plenty of hiding places.82

How long does a Laos Forest Scorpion live?

Your Laos Forest Scorpion can live between 5 and 10 years with proper care. Providing a stable environment, correct diet, and regular maintenance will help it reach its full lifespan. Enjoy watching this fascinating creature thrive over the years.52

Can I handle a Laos Forest Scorpion?

Handling is not recommended because this scorpion is venomous and can be skittish, especially if wild-caught. Captive-bred young are often docile, but it's best to use tools or a small container for moving it. Admire your scorpion from a safe distance to keep both of you happy and safe.32
