Looks how to spot one

Exoskeleton

The body is a hard, metallic exoskeleton that shimmers with green, gold, red, blue and near-black hues depending on the light. Males have smooth, upward-curving mandibles that are ornamental rather than aggressive.21

ColoursMetallic greengoldredbluenear-black13

Personality what they are like

Rainbow stag beetles are very calm and non-aggressive. They rarely pinch and are safe to handle gently, though handling should be kept brief to avoid stress.23

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Low. They are display pets that do not need exercise or walks. Provide branches and cork bark to climb on inside the enclosure.31

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Minimal. The enclosure needs spot-cleaning of old food. No grooming is required. Handle only when necessary, letting the beetle walk onto your open hand over a soft surface.3

Home where they are happiest

A ventilated terrarium or plastic container at least 30 x 30 x 30 cm for a single adult or pair. Use a deep layer of moist coconut fibre or forest-floor substrate, topped with leaves for cover. Keep temperature between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius and humidity at 60 to 80 per cent. No heating equipment is needed in a typical room. Provide cork bark and branches for climbing.31

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Adults eat beetle jelly or soft, sweet fruits such as banana, apple, mango, peach and melon. Females benefit from protein-rich fruits like banana to support egg production. Larvae eat fermented hardwood flake soil or decayed wood fibres.213

Company who they like around

Solitary. Adults can be kept alone or as a male-female pair in a suitably sized enclosure. They do not need company and are not social insects.3

The story where it all began

The rainbow stag beetle was first described by Sir William Macleay in 1885, who named it after Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, a Victorian government botanist. It is the only species in its genus, Phalacrognathus. Native to the rainforests of northern Queensland and New Guinea, it has been bred in captivity for many years and is now one of the most popular pet stag beetles worldwide due to its brilliant colours and easy care.12

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Stag Beetle?

Feed your stag beetle fresh beetle jelly or soft fruit every two to three days, removing any uneaten food to keep the enclosure clean. For females, offer protein-rich fruit like banana a bit more often to support egg production. Always check the food label and ask your exotic-pet vet for specific amounts.213

What does a Stag Beetle eat, and what should it never eat?

Adults enjoy beetle jelly and soft sweet fruits such as banana, apple, mango, peach and melon. Females benefit from protein-rich fruits like banana. Never feed them anything not listed here, and avoid hard, dry or processed foods. Larvae need fermented hardwood flake soil or decayed wood fibres.213

How much space does a Stag Beetle need?

A single adult or a male-female pair needs a ventilated terrarium or plastic container at least 30 x 30 x 30 cm. Provide a deep layer of moist coconut fibre or forest-floor substrate topped with leaves, plus cork bark and branches for climbing.31

What temperature, light or water does a Stag Beetle need?

Keep the enclosure between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius with humidity at 60 to 80 per cent. No heating equipment is needed in a typical room. Provide a shallow water dish or mist the substrate lightly, and offer a day-night light cycle but no special lighting.31

How often should I clean a Stag Beetle's home?

Spot-clean old food every few days to prevent mould. A full substrate change is needed only every few months or when it looks soiled. Always use fresh, moist coconut fibre or forest-floor substrate.3

Can a Stag Beetle live with others?

Stag beetles are solitary and do not need company. Adults can be kept alone or as a male-female pair in a suitably sized enclosure, but they are not social insects.3

How long does a Stag Beetle live?

The lifespan varies by species and care, but many stag beetles live from several months to a couple of years as adults. For specific details, ask a good breeder or an exotic-pet vet.

Can I handle a Stag Beetle?

Yes, they are very calm and rarely pinch, but keep handling brief to avoid stress. Let the beetle walk onto your open hand over a soft surface, and never grab or squeeze it.23
