A marine reef aquarium with rock and glass surfaces to graze. LiveAquaria gives 72-78 °F (about 22-26 °C), pH 8.1-8.4, dKH 8-12 and specific gravity 1.023-1.025. No minimum tank size was given by the sources.2

A herbivore that eats algae films, diatoms and cyanobacteria; it only nibbles lightly at longer hair algae.2

Company who they like around

Peaceful and often kept in groups as part of a clean-up crew.2

The story where it all began

Linnaeus set up the genus Trochus in 1758, borrowing a name first used by Guillaume Rondelet in 1558. The genus once held many unrelated shells and has since been trimmed down to a smaller group of true top shells.1

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

Unlike some look-alike snails, a trochus can flip itself back over when knocked onto its back.2

  2. 2

It often spawns in home aquariums, releasing eggs and sperm into the water, sometimes after a change in lighting or water.2

  3. 3

The thick pearly nacre inside top shells was once widely used to make mother-of-pearl buttons.1

  4. 4

The name Trochus was first used in 1558, two centuries before Linnaeus made it a formal genus.1

Recognised by the official bits

Taxonomy (via Wikipedia)
Genus Trochus Linnaeus, 1758 (family Trochidae). Aquarium snails are usually sold only to genus level; the big commercial 'trochus' shell, Tectus niloticus, now belongs to a different family.1
