At a glance the quick version
General figures for the domestic rat species from the MSD Veterinary Manual; club standards set no separate weight for this coat type, which shares the standard fancy rat body.
Coat and looks how to spot one
Bristle (harsh, wiry stand-off coat)
A Bristle Coat feels crunchy and stiff, a little like a wire-haired terrier. Young kittens show a light wave much like a Rex, but the coat straightens as they grow into a rough coat that stands away from the body, with little undercoat. Whiskers are straight or curl only at the tips, and males usually have the harshest coats.16
Personality what they are like
The bristle gene affects the coat only, so these rats have the same sociable, trainable and affectionate nature as other fancy rats.54
Daily activity how busy a day looks
As lively as any fancy rat. Most active around dusk and through the night, it needs daily supervised time out of the cage, things to climb and forage for, and short play or training sessions.47
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
No brushing or bathing needed, as rats groom themselves. Expect the soft, wavy baby coat to straighten and turn harsher as the rat matures; that change is normal for the variety.14
Home where they are happiest
The largest multi-level rat cage you can fit, with shelves, ropes, ladders, hammocks and hideouts, dust-free bedding such as shredded paper, placed in a quiet room around 19-23 C away from direct sun and draughts.72
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A complete rat nugget or pellet as the daily staple, with small portions of vegetables, a little fruit, grains and cooked egg counted into the ration. Keep sugary or fatty bits for training rewards, scatter some food to encourage foraging, and provide fresh water from a bottle at all times.8
Company who they like around
A very sociable animal that should share its home with at least one other rat, in a same-sex pair or small group or a neutered mixed pair, and enjoys daily time with its people.45
The story where it all began
Bristle Coat rats were developed in the United States by Jozzette and Michael Hagemann. The coat comes from a dominant gene, written Br, and AFRMA accepted it as a standardised variety on 6 December 2014.1
Fun facts for the dinner table
Recognised by the official bits
- American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association (AFRMA)
- Standardised on 6 December 2014 as the seventh AFRMA variety; the coat should feel like a wire brush, coarse and stiff. Faults include a coat that is not harsh enough or adults that keep waves.1

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Bristle Coat Rat?
Feed your Bristle Coat Rat a complete rat nugget or pellet daily as the staple, with small portions of vegetables, fruit, grains and cooked egg counted into the ration. Scatter some food to encourage foraging and provide fresh water from a bottle at all times. For exact amounts, check the food label and ask your vet.8 Furry Diary plan
What should a Bristle Coat Rat eat, and which foods are dangerous?
A complete rat nugget or pellet should be the daily staple, with small portions of vegetables, a little fruit, grains and cooked egg. Dangerous foods include alcohol, chocolate, caffeine, avocado, citrus, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, chives, raw meat, raw eggs, and xylitol. Always avoid these and consult your vet for a full list.89
Should I bathe a Bristle Coat Rat?
No, bathing is not needed as rats groom themselves. A Bristle Coat Rat will keep clean on its own, so you can skip baths entirely.14
Does a Bristle Coat Rat need brushing?
No, brushing is not needed for a Bristle Coat Rat. They groom themselves, and their coat naturally changes from soft and wavy to harsh and wiry as they mature.14
How do I look after a Bristle Coat Rat's nails and teeth?
Check nails every three weeks and trim if needed, but never cut into the quick. Provide wooden chews and hard food to help wear down teeth naturally. For nail trimming guidance, ask your vet or a good breeder.8 Furry Diary plan
How much space and exercise does a Bristle Coat Rat need?
Provide the largest multi-level rat cage you can fit, with shelves, ropes, ladders, hammocks and hideouts. They need daily supervised time out of the cage for at least an hour, plus things to climb and forage for. Place the cage in a quiet room around 19-23°C away from sun and draughts.72 Furry Diary plan
Should a Bristle Coat Rat live alone or with friends?
A Bristle Coat Rat is very sociable and should share its home with at least one other rat, in a same-sex pair or small group or a neutered mixed pair. They also enjoy daily time with their people.45
How long does a Bristle Coat Rat live?
A Bristle Coat Rat typically lives between 1.5 and 3 years. Providing good care, diet and regular vet check-ups can help them live a full, happy life.42
Is a Bristle Coat Rat a good pet for children?
Yes, they are sociable, trainable and affectionate, making them wonderful companions. However, children should be supervised to ensure gentle handling and respect for the rat's needs. Their small size means they can be fragile, so adult guidance is important.54
How do I hold a Bristle Coat Rat?
Gently scoop your rat with both hands, supporting its chest and hindquarters, and let it feel secure. Never grab by the tail or squeeze. Let the rat come to you first, and handle it calmly and confidently.4
