scales

This gecko has large, fish-like scales on its body and tail that are quite unusual. The head scales are tiny, while the tail scales are especially big and can be rubbed together to make a rattling sound when the animal feels threatened.17

Personality what they are like

Frog-eyed geckos are skittish and easily stressed, so they are not suitable for frequent handling. They are best enjoyed as observation animals, watching them hunt and move around their enclosure at night. When frightened, they may hiss, squeak, or rattle their tail scales, and they can drop their tail as a defence.315

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Nocturnal and fossorial, they need a deep, loose sand substrate to dig and burrow. They do not climb much, so floor space is more important than height. Provide plenty of hiding spots with rocks, caves, and artificial plants.34

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Very low humidity is essential, ideally under 30%. A shallow water dish should be provided and changed regularly. The enclosure should have a dry top layer of sand with a slightly damp layer below, or humidity hides can be used. Low-output UVB lighting is recommended.35

Home where they are happiest

A minimum enclosure size of 3 x 2 x 2 feet (90 x 60 x 60 cm) for a single gecko, with a temperature gradient of 22-32°C and humidity below 30%. A deep, dry sand substrate is vital for burrowing. They are not illegal to keep in most countries, but they are a protected species in some parts of their native range; always check local laws before acquiring one.534

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Strictly insectivorous. Feed a variety of live insects such as crickets, locusts, cockroaches, mealworms, and waxworms. Dust food with calcium and multivitamin supplements regularly, and gut-load the insects for extra nutrition.547

Company who they like around

Males are territorial and must never be housed together. A male and female can live as a bonded pair, and multiple females can coexist in a large enough enclosure with plenty of hiding spots. They are not social animals and do not need companionship; solitary housing is fine.34

The story where it all began

The frog-eyed gecko has been kept in captivity for quite a while, but it remains less common than many other gecko species because its care is more challenging. It requires very dry conditions and a deep sand substrate, which sets it apart from typical pet geckos. Its unusual appearance and behaviour make it a rewarding species for experienced keepers who enjoy observing natural desert adaptations.63

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Frog-eyed Gecko?

Furry Diary's starting plan is to feed your gecko based on its age and size, and to dust the insects with calcium and multivitamins as your vet recommends. Juveniles may need daily feeding, while adults can be fed every other day or a few times a week. Always check with your vet for a schedule tailored to your gecko.54 Furry Diary plan

What does a Frog-eyed Gecko eat, and what should it never eat?

Your gecko is strictly insectivorous and should eat live insects like crickets, locusts, cockroaches, mealworms, and waxworms. Never feed it any plant matter, fruits, or vegetables, and avoid wild-caught insects that may carry pesticides. Always gut-load the insects and dust them with supplements as your vet advises.547

How much space does a Frog-eyed Gecko need?

A single gecko needs a minimum enclosure of 3 x 2 x 2 feet (90 x 60 x 60 cm), with floor space being more important than height since they are ground-dwelling burrowers. Provide a deep, loose sand substrate for digging and plenty of hiding spots with rocks and caves.354

What temperature, light or water does a Frog-eyed Gecko need?

Maintain a temperature gradient of 22-32°C with a warm and cool end, and keep humidity very low, ideally under 30%. Provide a shallow water dish changed regularly, and use low-output UVB lighting. Furry Diary suggests checking temperatures daily and replacing UVB bulbs every six months as the maker advises.35 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Frog-eyed Gecko's home?

Spot clean daily to remove waste and uneaten food, and do a full clean of the enclosure once a month. Furry Diary's plan includes daily spot cleaning and a monthly deep clean to keep your gecko healthy. Furry Diary plan

Can a Frog-eyed Gecko live with others?

Males are territorial and must never be housed together, but a bonded male-female pair or multiple females can coexist in a large enclosure with plenty of hiding spots. They are not social animals, so solitary housing is perfectly fine.34

How long does a Frog-eyed Gecko live?

With proper care, a frog-eyed gecko can live between 12 and 20 years, so be ready for a long-term commitment. Regular vet check-ups and a good diet help support a long, healthy life.35

Can I handle a Frog-eyed Gecko?

Frog-eyed geckos are skittish and easily stressed, so they are best enjoyed as observation animals rather than handled. Handling can cause them to drop their tail as a defense, so it's best to keep handling to a minimum and always be gentle if needed.315
