Looks how to spot one

Slender body with a slightly flattened tail, round lidless eyes and sticky toe pads. The skin is very delicate and velvety.2

ColoursBright green to yellowish greenGold speckles on neck and upper backThree rust-coloured bars on snout and headBlue skin around the eyesThree tapering red bars on the lower backOff-white underside1

Personality what they are like

These geckos are inquisitive and confident, making them entertaining to watch. Males are aggressive towards other males and may also harm females if they cannot escape. They are fast, delicate and easily stressed, so handling is not recommended; their skin can tear and they can drop their tail as a defence.145

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Diurnal and highly active. Requires a spacious, tall enclosure with many vertical climbing opportunities (branches, cork rounds, bamboo hollows) and hiding places among dense foliage.25

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

This species needs a humid tropical environment: mist the enclosure with water at least twice a day to keep humidity high and provide drinking droplets on leaves. Clean water should always be available in a shallow bowl.5

Home where they are happiest

Minimum enclosure for one adult is 30 x 30 x 45 cm (12 x 12 x 18 inches). A pair or breeding group needs at least 45 x 45 x 60 cm (18 x 18 x 24 inches). The set-up should be arboreal with branches, foliage and hiding places. Being a tropical species, they need regular misting and a warm, humid environment.52

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivorous: feed small live insects (crickets, roaches, mealworms, waxworms) and commercially prepared day gecko diet (powdered meal replacement). Adults should get insects twice a week and powdered diet once a week. Calcium with vitamin D3 should be dusted on insects every other feeding; a multivitamin can be offered weekly.52

Company who they like around

Best kept as a pair or in a female-heavy group. Never house two males together because they are territorial and aggressive. Even females may fight in the presence of a male, so provide plenty of visual barriers and hiding spots.14

The story where it all began

The gold dust day gecko is a species from Madagascar and nearby islands that was introduced to Hawaii and other Pacific locations. It became popular in the pet trade for its striking colours and diurnal habits. Most individuals sold are wild-caught, but captive breeding is becoming more common. It is valued as a display pet because of its active, bold nature and vibrant appearance.15

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Gold Dust Day Gecko?

Feed adults small live insects twice a week and a powdered day gecko diet once a week. Young geckos may need more frequent feedings, so check with your vet for a schedule tailored to your pet.52 Furry Diary plan

What does a Gold Dust Day Gecko eat, and what should it never eat?

They eat small live insects like crickets and roaches, plus a powdered day gecko diet. Never feed them wild-caught insects or human food, as these can be harmful.52

How much space does a Gold Dust Day Gecko need?

One adult needs a minimum enclosure of 30 x 30 x 45 cm (12 x 12 x 18 inches). A pair or group needs at least 45 x 45 x 60 cm (18 x 18 x 24 inches), with plenty of vertical climbing spots.52

What temperature, light or water does a Gold Dust Day Gecko need?

They need a warm, humid tropical environment with misting at least twice daily for drinking droplets and humidity. Provide a shallow water bowl, and use UVB lighting as part of the setup, following the bulb maker's advice.5 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Gold Dust Day Gecko's home?

Spot clean daily and do a full clean once a month. Furry Diary's starting plan also suggests checking temperatures daily and changing the UVB bulb every six months. Furry Diary plan

Can a Gold Dust Day Gecko live with others?

Yes, they are best kept as a pair or a female-heavy group, but never house two males together as they are territorial and aggressive. Provide plenty of hiding spots to reduce stress.14

How long does a Gold Dust Day Gecko live?

With proper care, they can live 10 to 15 years, so be ready for a long-term commitment.123
